Main duties of the job
This role is to provide consultant services to maintain the capacity of the department during a period of expansion. The post holder will be expected to undertake the management of General ENT patients at MMH.
This post will be based at Medway Maritime Hospital and Darent Valley Hospital.
The appointee will participate fully in the clinical activities of the Department, providing general emergency ENT cover 1:8 during the week, each 'day' being 14 hours from 6.00pm-8.00am, and 1:8 weekends, each 'day' being 24 hours from 8.00am-8.00am on Saturday and Sunday. When on-call he/she will provide full support and advice to the resident and middle grade staff, and supervise/undertake whatever emergency surgery is required. He/she will undertake on-call ward rounds on both days at weekends in the course of delivering this on-call support, and be available to advise and support other specialties within the hospital as necessary.

Job responsibilities
Key areas/objectives for the postholder will include:
1. Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting to the Department.
2. Further develop and enhance General ENT services.
3. Play a role in meeting the 14 day and 62 day cancer waiting time targets and the 18 week Referral To Treat.
4. Share in the provision and leadership of a high-quality Otolaryngology service.
5. Provide teaching and training for trainees within the unit and non-medical personnel, and participate in General Practitioner training.
6. Active involvement in research.
7. Participation in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.
8. Abiding by the clinical and corporation governance policies of the Trust.
9. Adherence to GIRFT Principles.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
* FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent.
Desirable
* Higher Degree i.e. MD/PhD or equivalent to support research interest.
Knowledge Essential
* Understanding of Clinical Governance principles, demonstrating awareness of good decision making; awareness of own limitations with a track record of engaging in clinical governance and learning from errors.
Experience Essential
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in managing complex cases.
* Experience of supervising doctors in training and other colleagues along with the ability to teach clinical skills.
Desirable
* Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management and evidence-based practice.
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements.
