Job summary
We are excited to be recruiting to a new role within the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering. The Head of Diagnostic Medical Physics will provide strong, dynamic leadership to all Medical Physics services provided by the Radiation Science Services, MR and Ultrasound Physics, and Nuclear Medicine Physics groups. As a Consultant Clinical Scientist they will provide professional, expert leadership and advice to the Trust and external organisations, and ensures that the services provided are safe, effective and efficient and patient focused, complying with all relevant regulations, legislation and best practice.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work closely with other group heads in the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering to ensure a seamless Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Service.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
* Highly specialised theoretical and practical knowledge in one or more Diagnostic Medical Physics specialities
* Significant experience in a leadership role within a hospital based Diagnostic Medical Physics service, with a track record of engagement and innovation
* Expert knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines relating to Diagnostic Medical Physics
* Highly advanced knowledge of risk management processes and understanding of patient and staff risks arising from Diagnostic Medical Physics
* Understanding of quality management systems e.g. ISO9001 or BS70000
* Experience in the preparation of strategic plans, business cases and reports
* Ability to manage and resolve complex clinical and operational situations, including data analysis, that involve staff from all levels within an organisation and across a range of professional boundaries
* Experience of working with internal multi-disciplinary committees and establishing relationships with external organisations
* Experience of contributing to one or more Diagnostic Medical Physics specialities at a national level and establishing relationships with other UK senior healthcare professionals
* Proven experience of leading and managing substantial change within a complex environment
* Business and project planning, commissioning, HR and financial management
Desirable
* Ongoing participation and success in academic or NHS research and development e.g. grants/publications
Skills and Abilities
Essential
* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with evidence of this at a senior level
* Ability to facilitate and drive service improvement, engaging others and reinforcing change
* Able to think strategically and translate into practice, resolving complex operational problems and mitigating risks
* Able to inspire, influence and motivate people by demonstrating strong leadership and leading by example
* Ability to analyse and interpret financial and management information
* Ability to prioritise work and manage deadlines
Qualifications and Training
Essential
* Honours degree in Physical Science
* Doctoral qualification (e.g. PhD, DClinSci, DPhil) in physical science or equivalent experience
* HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist
* AHCS Higher Specialist Scientist Register or ability to achieve within reasonable timescale
* MIPEM or FIPEM or equivalent
* Current/past scientific role at a national level (e.g. IPEM Senior Volunteer position, Special Interest Group or equivalent)
* Management qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable
* Certified RPA, RWA, LPA, MRSE or MPE in specific area
* NHS Leadership qualification (e.g. Mary Seacole, Rosalind Franklin, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Nye Bevan)
