Job summary
Your role will be to assist our Biomedical Scientists within the laboratory, including:
* Checking sample integrity prior to analysis,
* Processing clinical specimens for Bacteriological culture
* Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment
* Undertake housekeeping tasks within the laboratory
* Any other tasks required by the scientific team.
Main duties of the job
To work as an integral part of the laboratory team, assisting Biomedical Scientists within the laboratory, including the processing of clinical specimens for bacteriological culture and viral testing, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, undertaking housekeeping tasks within the laboratory and any other tasks required by the scientific team.
At all times to act in accordance with and adhere to laboratory and Trust procedures and protocols.
To rotate (after suitable training and competency testing) through all sections of the Microbiology department.
To use personal protective equipment as required by the laboratory's health and safety procedures.
To carry out the pre-analytical processing of samples received into the laboratory.
To process clinical specimens for Bacteriological culture.
To undertake the referral of specimens to reference laboratories.
To undertake housekeeping tasks including the disposal of laboratory waste and operation of autoclave sterilisers.
After suitable training, to carry out basic maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment.
To participate in rotas covering Extended days Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays as required.

Job responsibilities

13. To rectify and or bring to the attention of more senior staff/Laboratory Management any issues compromising this goal.
14. To be courteous and professional when dealing with other health care professionals or patients.

Qualifications
Essential
* A* - C Grade at GCSE or Equivalent
Desirable
* Qualification in Clinical Laboratory Support or IT/Keyboard skills (NVQ 3 level) or equivalent.
* Evidence of training in Health & Safety and Quality.
* Evidence of training in Customer Service.
Experience
Essential
* Experience of working in a busy, high throughput environment.
Desirable
* Broad Knowledge of medical terminology.
* Previous experience of working in an NHS environment.
Knowledge
Essential
* PC and word processing experience.
Desirable
* A good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
