BAM is seeking a Head of Social Sustainability. In this role, you will report to the Social Sustainability Director and be a key member of the UK & Ireland (UK&I) Social Sustainability Senior Leadership team (SLT), serving as one of three Business Partners. Your primary responsibility will be to support the UK&I Division in its quest to become the most socially conscious contractor and achieve a minimum of 35% social value against revenue by the end of 2026.
Your mission
As a strategic partner with the operational business, you will lead a team of Social Sustainability managers and coordinators located Southern England and Southern Wales. This role will provide leadership and direction and specialised social sustainability knowledge to fulfil BAM’s social sustainability commitments. As part of the Social Sustainability senior leadership team you will influence BAM UK&I strategic development, performance processes and systems, as well as guide a progressive approach to work winning, research and thought leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead delivery of the ‘social’ element BAM UK&I’s sustainability strategy, deploying a roadmap to 35% Social Value against revenue by end of 2026.
• Lead and manage a team of social sustainability specialists, coordinate and manage staff resource allocation ensuring effective delivery of contractual commitments
• Be the primary contact for business segments seeking specialist Social Sustainability knowledge and support.
• Build trusting relationships, effectively collaborating with cross functional teams (D&I, L&D, Procurement, Operations) to ensure alignment, identify new opportunities and reduce duplication of effort.
• Guide, advise and influence key clients, government and industry stakeholders
• Support strategic work winning and tender activities bringing innovative ideas and approaches that will be a key differentiator for BAM.
• Embed social sustainability principles and maximise social value opportunities in our supply chain.
• Drive cultural change and influence stakeholders across the business.
• Guide, advise, and influence key clients, government entities, and industry stakeholders, and contribute to thought leadership
• Improve efficiency through standardisation of processes, and continued development of accessible shared resources.
• Identify and develop national programmes aligned to BAM’s key themes of Social Inclusion, Social Mobility and the Foundational Economy.
• Manage and coordinate work with our external partners.
• Develop training and materials to advance the knowledge of Social Sustainability managers, coordinators and champions as well as wider workforce, ensuring a high level of understanding of social value and impact.
• Monitor business performance in Social Sustainability and produce regular reports and presentations for divisional and segment management teams
• Coordinate industry insights, development, policy and legislation for direction setting and to ensure BAM is consistently moving with or ahead of industry trends.
• Working with BAM’s marketing and communication teams, coordinate internal and external communication of social sustainability activities

• Significant experience gained through social sustainability, social value, social impact, and/ or community development roles within organisations (private and/or public sector).
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to develop strong, positive relationships and to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.
• Experience in managing people and teams within a matrix organisation.
• Ability to implement and execute strategy across multiple business segments to drive change.
• Experience of working with, and influencing, senior stakeholders internally and externally (including private and public sector clients )
• Demonstrable commercial awareness.
• A high level of understanding of the current and future landscape regarding social sustainability, including government strategy and policy, private and public sector client priorities and approaches.
• Extensive knowledge of social value and impact measurement models and methodology and experience of imbedding frameworks in complex structures (at organisation and project level) including digital reporting and experience of working with TOMs.
• Significant experience of working within a successful bidding/ work-winning environment
• A high degree of energy and self-motivation; analytical with ability to identify, develop and implement solutions.
• Enthusiasm and ability to inspire and motivate colleagues.
• Possession of a relevant qualification at degree level.
