The surgical team is looking to recruit a Pelvic Oncology Fellow to join the team on a fixed-term basis for 12 months, commencing on 6th August 2025.
The colorectal unit in Swansea treats 250 new cancer cases per year. The Swansea Pelvic Oncology service is the only dedicated multi-disciplinary pelvic oncology team in Wales, treating patients with locally advanced and locally recurrent pelvic malignancies originating from any of the pelvic organs. Patients are regularly referred to Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) from all Health Boards in Wales for specialist MDT assessment.
The Swansea pelvic oncology team has provided multidisciplinary care to patients with advanced pelvic malignancy for over 20 years. The surgical team comprises three colorectal, three urological, two gynaecological, and one plastic surgeon. In the last few years, on average, over 50 advanced pelvic resections have been performed for locally advanced primary and recurrent rectal cancer. The volume of surgery has increased markedly. Additionally, the fellow would be exposed to surgery for advanced gynaecological and urological malignancies and will be involved in all aspects of management from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.
Main duties of the job
1. Develop surgical skills and techniques to perform surgery for locally advanced and recurrent pelvic cancer, including multi-visceral resections and exenterations, such as cystectomy, radical hysterectomy, vulvectomy, and sacrectomy.
2. Provide senior trainees with increased exposure to rectal cancer surgery, including laparoscopic and open low anterior resection and eLAPE, as well as open pelvic side wall dissection.
3. Provide senior trainees with exposure to different reconstructive approaches after major colorectal pelvic resections.
