The Business Manager (EA) role is an integral part of the ID&D Leadership team, done well it creates and maintains an effective working environment for the leadership team, which in turn benefits everyone working in and on behalf of ID&D, as well as our wide range of stakeholders. This unique role is fast paced, varied, and provides a fantastic opportunity to work across all parts of ID&D, ET and the broader National Grid group.
This role requires someone who drives solutions, is open to change, can work to tight deadlines and is comfortable with ambiguity. It also requires a sound knowledge of the transmission business and a good grasp of the future challenges and opportunities for networks on the road to NetZero. To be successful you will need to see the big picture, connect it to our daily work and build strong networks throughout the business to ensure impact and delivery.
Job Purpose
To ensure an effective business cadence is maintained with the right meetings happening at the right time to support decision making with clarity and at the right level.
To drive and facilitate, on behalf of the Director of ID&D and the leadership team, the processes and organisation behind critical cross-directorate initiatives and projects – relieving administrative burden wherever possible.
To provide general advice to the Director of ID&D in the fulfilment of executive duties, including strategic reporting and governance.
This role provides an opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of ID&D and the ET/NGET business, working closely with the ID&D leadership team and other members of ET Executive.
What you'll be doing
1. Advise the Director of ID&D in all activities that deliver against ET’s objectives.
2. Maintain the leadership meeting structure across ID&D, ensuring appropriate operational cadence, effective decision making and alignment with our operational objectives and transformation ambition.
3. Act as an advisor and trusted confidant for the Director of ID&D and leadership team, building trust across the organisation to be able to lead through influence.
4. Drive and coordinate critical projects, initiatives, and cross-functional work ensuring progress towards operating and transformation objectives, alignment to ET strategy and effective collaboration across ID&D and NGET.
5. Utilise knowledge and understanding of operational policies and procedures to create and edit executive documentation.
6. Organise incoming requests, handle what you can, delegate what you can, advise the Director and leadership team on approaches and actions to take.
7. Research, gather and compile data and information to create insight for the leadership team.
8. Lead on the collation of papers for governance committees, acting as a filter and working with the team on submissions, to maximise the impact of discussions.
9. Act as a central point of liaison with other Business Units, Functions and external stakeholders to ensure shared understanding and expectations in addition to solving challenges.
10. Develop the content and key messages for external events, coordinating with Corporate Affairs and SMEs where relevant, to ensure the Director of ID&D is fully prepared.
11. Ensure the workings of the ID&D leadership team are transparent to the organisation, understood and responsive to feedback from colleagues, including active sponsorship and support of ID&Ds “ET Colleague Voice.”
About you
1. Understands the ET business and the energy sector in terms of structure, regulatory environment and the short- and long-term issues affecting the industry.
2. Ability to apply an understanding of the operational and commercial challenges facing the business to support critical decision making.
3. Strategic mindset with the ability to join the dots, connecting ideas and individuals to promote the overarching objectives of ID&D and ET.
4. A strong track record of leadership, delivery, performance and continuous improvement is essential, given the multi-faceted and challenging nature of this role.
5. Strong networking, stakeholder management and influencing skills, demonstrated through a track record in current or previous roles.
6. Excellent written and communication skills, ability to structure key messages.
7. Pragmatic self-starter, strong critical reasoning skills, problem solving and big picture thinking.
8. Openness and flexibility to change, the ability to work to tight deadlines, and comfortable with ambiguity.
9. Ability to build and execute short-and long-term business plans and strategies.
10. Ability to think in a structured way and lead business projects.
