Job title: Principal Control & Automation Engineer

Salary: Up to £ 64,000 (depending on skills and experience)
What you’ll be doing:
1. Design and deliver naval ship-wide Integrated Platform Management Systems (IPMS), including feasibility studies, research, and solution development
2. Develop automation solution requirements, system operational philosophies, functional designs, and acceptance plans
3. Provide technical leadership and direction, resolving complex engineering challenges
4. Manage key suppliers, including defining statements of work and agreeing on acceptance criteria
5. Oversee acceptance planning, ensuring safety cases, product integrity, and software assurance compliance
6. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, drafting and reviewing technical reports to communicate findings effectively
Your skills and experiences:
1. Extensive experience with platform management, controls and systems including feasibility studies, research, and solution development or similar Engineering discipline
2. Experience in developing automation solution requirements, system operational philosophies, functional designs, and acceptance plans
3. Experience of requirement specifications, system operational philosophy, solution functional design sections and acceptance plans
4. Experience in providing technical leadership and direction in solving technical issues
5. You will be qualified to degree level, or have equivalent work experience in Controls and Automation or a closely related discipline
6. Working towards the requirements for registration as Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council
Applicants should ideally be Degree qualified or have equivalent experience, likely to be in a technology, engineering, science or IT related discipline. Applicants should be a Chartered Engineer or hold another equivalent professional registration with a relevant institution.

The Future Business & Technology Team (Naval Ships):
The Future Business & Technology (FB&T) Team at BAE Systems Naval Ships is developing cutting-edge technologies for future platforms like T83 and MRSS while enhancing existing ones such as T26. As an IPMS Engineer, you will lead the development of an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), a critical warship system, with secured funding from the Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO). This initiative offers a unique opportunity to drive innovation and improve cost efficiency.
IPMS integrates and manages key ship systems, enhancing automation, platform availability, and operational efficiency in complex battlespaces. This cross-business project involves collaboration with BAE Systems’ global divisions and industry partners, shaping the next-generation IPMS for future combatant ships.
