Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, HCPC registered candidate to join the Mid Yorkshire Pathology Team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, working in the Microbiology Department based at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.
The post holder will be a part of a team of Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants delivering a high quality Microbiology service. Responsibilities include undertaking laboratory investigations, participating in quality activities, attending departmental meetings, training staff, complying with national standards, troubleshooting equipment, and mentoring staff.
Main duties of the job
The ideal candidate must have a wide experience of all aspects of general microbiology diagnostic testing. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the desire to provide a service of the highest quality. Previous experience working in a clinical laboratory and completion (or nearing completion) of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology is required.
Job responsibilities
1. To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work within the department.
2. To carry out testing on a daily basis on a range of bodily fluids and tissues.
3. To evaluate the suitability of samples and identify anomalous results.
4. To carry out specialist technical tasks using analytical skills, including authorisation of test results.
5. To maintain high technical standards and ensure cleanliness in work areas.
6. To assist in the evaluation of new methods and equipment.
7. To conduct audits in line with CPA guidelines.

Experience
Essential
* Substantial experience of working in a NHS hospital Microbiology department.
Desirable
* Experience of working with current analysers and automated systems.
Qualifications
Essential
* Final Examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), HNC, or equivalent in Microbiology.
* Accredited degree by the IBMS.
* Current registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Microbiology.
* Demonstrates achievement and maintenance of competency levels.
Desirable
* Qualifications in Information Technology (e.g. CLAIT/ECDL).
* Qualifications in Health and Safety (e.g. IOSH).
Knowledge and Awareness
Essential
* Good knowledge of health and safety principles in a Microbiology Department.
* Awareness of own limitations.
Desirable
* Knowledge of Health and Safety law and its application to Microbiology.
* Experience in other Pathology disciplines.
Personal Attributes

* Able to work well within a small team and independently.
