Job summary We are seeking a dynamic consultant colleague to join us in the Portsmouth Breast Unit. You should be in a position to offer the full range of skills expected of a modern Breast Radiologist and be keen to learn new techniques and develop the breast service. A further interest in Oncology and Gynaecology imaging would be highly desirable. We are a cohesive and friendly Breast Imaging team which is focused on creating a positive work environment. Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust Breast Unit is one of the largest in the UK treating approximately 700 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year and has a recognised Breast Screening Service. The Breast Unit encompasses the Portsmouth Breast Screening Programme and the local symptomatic breast service. The Screening Programme invites 85,000 women from Portsmouth and the surrounding area each round and diagnoses approximately 300 new breast cancers a year. Women considered to be at high risk of breast cancer were adopted by the Portsmouth NHS BSP in January 2015. This service and the surveillance of women at moderately increased risk of breast cancer are supported by our excellent links with the local Genetics Service via our Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Main duties of the job The Breast Imaging Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital has three Siemens Revelation Mammography Units, each with tomosynthesis and stereo capability and is equipped with a Toshiba Aplio i800 and two Philips Epiq5 ultrasound machines. We perform diagnostic breast MRI on a 1.5T GE scanner and a 3.0T GE scanner. We offer stereotactic x-ray guided vacuum assisted biopsies first line for microcalcifications using our two Bard Encor Inspire systems. The breast imaging unit offers an ultrasound and stereotactic vacuum assisted excision service. The local symptomatic service receives all new referrals directly to multi-disciplinary one-stop clinics and diagnoses approximately 400 new breast cancers per year. The imaging team is key to this pathway, supporting our surgical colleagues with information sufficient to reassure or diagnose patients. This role extends to incorporate the acquisition of tissue for histopathological diagnosis in the majority of cancer cases, completing disease staging and guiding decision making for the wider MDT to support patients through their treatment and ongoing post-therapy surveillance.
