Marine Operations Officer Apprentice (Level 4)
Where are they based?
This apprenticeship is based on the Humber, likely Grimsby.
What’s it all about?
As an island nation, over 95% of trade by volume goes by ship through more than 100 ports around the United Kingdom. UK ports employ around 118,000 people – from container and bulk cargo ports to passenger terminals to leisure and marinas. ABP’s Marine Operations Teams ensure the safe transit and handling of vessels in and out of the port. The Port Marine Operations Officer apprenticeship programme is designed for individuals who are interested in developing their career in a marine environment and provides a rare and exciting opportunity to learn about shipping and port operations.
As a Marine Operations Apprentice you may be involved in: the berthing of vessels, port control and marine services, operation of harbours and marinas, conservancy, environmental protection, statutory compliance and operation of harbour marine craft within the Harbour Authority area of jurisdiction. We look for highly motivated individuals as this is an extremely responsible position with a key contribution to the safe and efficient operation of the port.
You will receive hands-on training in various aspects of port marine operations such as lock and dock operations, mooring boat operations, health and safety tasks within a port operation, radio room and marine control centre operations. You will be required to work various shifts in all environments to support our customers’ needs. Throughout the programme you will also gain an understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Berthing Master, Dock Masters and deputies, Harbour Masters and their assistants.
What are the career opportunities?
This apprenticeship could lead to specialist and senior roles within the port industry including: Berthing Master, Assistant Harbour Master, Assistant Dock Master, Hydrographer, Vessel Traffic Services and roles in port management.
How long does it take?
This apprenticeship involves rigorous and substantial training up to 3 years.
What are the entry requirements?
1. 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above which must include English and Maths at Level 5 or above. Please ensure your individual subject grades are listed in your CV, including any predicted grades.
2. A keen interest in the marine/port industry.
3. Able to use initiative and take ownership for own performance.
4. Strives to achieve the best results with a talent for problem-solving.
5. Resilience, with the ability to maintain a positive attitude when working under pressure.
6. Strong team-working and leadership abilities.
