About Network Rail
At Network Rail, we are part of a large family serving millions of passengers and freight users throughout the UK every day. Our service impacts millions of people and we strive to become more efficient as we enhance, maintain, and operate our network.
Now is a fantastic time to join our team in Wales and the Western region as we finalize the reforms to our maintenance organization which will deliver:
1. A safer and more reliable and punctual service for passengers and employees.
2. Quicker fault fixes by more agile multi-disciplined response teams.
3. Individual rostering enabling us to send the right number of people to fix a fault.
4. Multi-skilling investing in the knowledge and skills of our people so they are better equipped to fix the most common faults themselves.
5. Accelerated and improved technology deployment.
Our passengers and freight users are at the heart of everything we do. When you're part of our team, you matter to us and you matter to millions.
Brief Description
You will help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do: the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
About the role (External)
Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team's operatives, specializing in Signalling & Telecoms. You will be working with equipment including signals that control when trains can run, level crossings, and points systems. With your willingness to learn, you'll develop a huge range of technical skills across various manual, electrical, and digital equipment.
You will need to be safety-focused, respectful of rules, and a team player, as you'll often be working next to moving trains. You will lead the team when asked by the team leader, ensuring safe work delivery and checking that the team has the right competencies to meet our strict safety standards.
Your skills matter
You don't necessarily need rail experience, but you do need to show how your transferrable skills meet the following:
1. Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
2. Effective communicator: Strong communication skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
3. Technical skills: Knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques in the discipline you are applying for.
4. Safety: Role model safe behaviors and implement safe systems of work.
5. Problem solver: Persistent in finding safe and effective solutions.
6. Willingness to learn: Develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline.
7. Relevant qualification: Ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline you are applying for or equivalent experience.
It matters that this is the right role for you
Shifts involve a changing pattern including days, nights, and weekends. You will work outside in all weathers and need a driving license (category B) for Network Rail vehicles. You must also be within a 60-minute commute of the location you are applying for.
Benefits
As a Network Rail employee, you will enjoy a wide range of benefits including:
* 28 days annual leave entitlement.
* Privileged staff travel and discounts.
* Healthcare offers and cycle to work schemes.
* Flexible working arrangements.
* 5 days paid volunteering leave.
* 2 weeks paid reserve leave for the Armed Forces community.
We are committed to diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from everyone!
