Locum Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology

This post is for a locum Obstetrician and Gynaecologist consultant for one year. The role will have extensive responsibilities in obstetrics, acute and general gynaecology. This post complements five consultants at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, and six consultants at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, involving work at both sites, primarily based at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. The consultant may undertake some clinical duties at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.
The successful candidate will provide general obstetric and acute gynaecology services, including on call, labour ward leadership, and obstetric risk management. Broad experience in obstetrics and labour ward management is expected. SPA time will be used for clinical management duties, clinical audit, research, clinical governance, teaching, training, and reflective practice.

About Us
The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is part of the Women and Children's Care Group, which includes a countywide Paediatric service. The service is consultant-led at both Cumberland Infirmary (7 WTE consultants) and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven (five WTE consultants).
Both hospitals have a dedicated Out-Patient Suite with an Early Pregnancy Unit, Colposcopy, Rapid Access Clinics, Delivery Suite, Maternity Ward, Day Surgery Unit, Maternity Day Assessment Unit, and MLU.
At Cumberland Infirmary, there are approximately 1800 deliveries per year, and at West Cumberland Hospital, approximately 1300 deliveries per year. There is also a midwifery-led unit at Penrith.
Specialist antenatal clinics include maternal medicine, diabetes, mental health, multiple pregnancy, and obesity, as well as a weekly Tele-medicine fetal medicine clinic linked to the tertiary centre's fetal medicine unit (Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle).
Multi-disciplinary team working is well developed within the department with Nurse Practitioner involvement in emergency gynaecology, early pregnancy, and fertility clinics.
Our CQC rating is GOOD, and we are undertaking a comprehensive maternity improvement plan to improve our rating to OUTSTANDING.

Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* Full GMC registration and a licence to practice (or eligibility to apply for by proposed start date).
* Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies in line with GMC Standards of Good Medical Practice.
* Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
* Instructor Status in either APLS/ALS.
Experience and Knowledge
* High level of clinical experience and competence in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
* Ability to perform major gynaecological procedures such as abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy.
* Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers, and other staff.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* A special interest to complement existing postholders in obstetrics and labour ward management.
Management and Administrative
* Ability to advise on the efficient running of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service.
