Pharmacy Technicians play a crucial role in the in-house Pharmacy Team supporting the practice's medicines management and optimisation processes. The successful applicant will work closely with the clinical team to improve patient safety, enhance prescribing efficiency and ensure cost-effective medication use.
James Alexander Family Practice are looking for a professional, motivated, experienced Pharmacy Technician to join our team. The Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice model is supported by the direction of national policy including the Five Year Forward View and GP Forward View where there is a need to better utilise the role of pharmacy within primary care to proactively help patients stay safe and well and out of hospital as well as helping to reduce the demands on general practice.
Pharmacy Technicians play an important role complementing GPs, clinical pharmacists both in general practice and the community and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
The successful applicant will join the team supported by the Clinical Pharmacist and wider practice Leadership Team to establish a successful pharmacy team.
The successful applicant will provide cover to both of our sites, at Bransholme Health Centre and Princes Medical Centre.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities:
1. Medication Reviews - Assist with structured medication reviews, reconciling medicines post-discharge and ensuring accurate records.
2. Repeat Prescriptions - Process and authorise repeat prescription requests in line with practice protocols and clinical guidelines.
3. Medication Safety - Identify and resolve medication-related issues, ensure compliance with national and local prescribing policies and contribute to audits.
4. Patient Education - Provide advice on medication use, side effects and adherence to treatment plans.
5. Support Prescribers - Work with the clinical team to improve prescribing quality and manage high-risk medicines.
6. Stock Management - Ensure efficient ordering, storage and disposal of medicines within the practice.
7. Data and Reporting - Assist with prescribing audits, data collection and reporting for quality improvement initiatives.

James Alexander Family Practice is a large Primary Care Organisation, delivering General Practice services across two sites; with practices at Bransholme Health Centre and Princes Medical Centre.

Our total list size is over 21,000 patients with over 13,000 registered at Bransholme, and over 8,000 at Princes Avenue.
We have a wide and diverse clinical team of both medical and non-medical staff with a range of staff including Clinical Practitioners, First Contact Physiotherapists, GP Assistants, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a Mental Health Practitioner. We also have a dedicated in-house Pharmacy Team.
We work closely with the Primary Care Network; Marmot PCN and both get support from and support the PCN.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Support the processing of repeat prescriptions, ensuring safety, accuracy and compliance with practice protocols.
2. Conduct medicines reconciliation following hospital discharges and other care transitions.
3. Assist in structured medication reviews to improve patient adherence and safety.
4. Monitor prescribing trends and support cost-effective prescribing within the surgery.

Patient Support & Education

Prescribing & Administrative Support

3. Support the practice in reducing medication waste and improving prescribing efficiency.
Safety & Compliance
1. Support compliance with local and national prescribing qualities (e.g. NICE, CQC, MHRA guidelines).
2. Assist with audits, medication safety reviews and reporting.
3. Ensure safe handling, storage and disposal of medicines in the practice.
Teamwork & Collaboration
1. Work alongside the clinical team to improve medicines management.
2. Assist in training and supervision of other staff regarding prescription processes.
3. Contribute to practice quality improvement initiatives related to medication safety.

Physical Requirements Essential
1. Able to undertake the requirements of the post.
Qualifications Essential
1. Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Knowledge Essential
1. Relevant advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Primary Care Networks, General Practice and evidence based medicine.
2. Knowledge and understanding of pharmacy law and ethics and current legislation.
3. Awareness of systems to support management of patients in a primary care setting.
4. Understands the principles of research governance.
Skills and competencies Essential
1. Recognise priorities when problem-solving and identify deviations from normal pattern.
2. Able to follow legal, ethical, professional, and organisational policies/procedures.
3. Able to analyse and interpret prescribing data.
4. Computer literate with an ability to use Microsoft office packages.
5. Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
Experience Essential
1. Minimum of 2 years experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
2. Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
