Job Description:
Join NHS Highland’s Finance Team – Supporting Patients and Services Across the Region.
NHS Highland is looking for a Financial Services Officer to join our Finance Team, with a key focus on patient travel. This role is crucial in ensuring the smooth processing of financial transactions, assisting patients with travel arrangements and claims. If you have strong organisational skills, financial experience, and enjoy helping people, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
About the Role
As a Financial Services Officer, you will work within NHS Highland’s Financial Services team, covering a range of financial transactions, with a focus on patient travel. You will:
1. Support patient travel services, checking, processing, and authorising travel claims while ensuring patients meet eligibility requirements.
2. Arrange patient transport, including flights and trains, often at short notice, liaising with hospitals, medical staff, and travel providers.
3. Maintain financial records and process invoices, ensuring transactions are coded correctly and in line with NHS financial procedures.
4. Liaise with suppliers, patients, and NHS staff to resolve financial queries efficiently and professionally.
5. Ensure security and compliance, particularly when processing financial transactions.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused individual who can work effectively within a financial environment while providing essential support to patients. You should have:
1. Experience in financial administration – ideally in accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash team, primary care, or patient travel services.
2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – the ability to support patients and families in sometimes stressful situations, providing clear and empathetic guidance.
3. Strong numerical and problem-solving skills – ensuring accuracy in financial transactions and the ability to resolve discrepancies.
4. Confidence handling cash and financial transactions – including banking, reconciliations, and secure storage of funds.
5. Good organisational skills and attention to detail – working with high volumes of transactions, meeting deadlines, and ensuring compliance with NHS financial procedures.
6. The ability to work independently and as part of a team – particularly in the cash office, where you may be responsible for managing transactions without direct supervision.
7. IT skills and experience using financial systems – knowledge of finance software, Excel, and database management would be beneficial.
Why Join NHS Highland?
1. A rewarding role where you make a real difference – supporting patients and services across the Highlands.
2. Flexible working options to promote work-life balance.
3. A supportive finance team with opportunities for development.
4. NHS benefits package, including pension scheme, generous annual leave, and staff discounts.
This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa. NHS Highland is unable to provide candidates with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
