Optegra has an exciting new job opportunity for an experienced Part-time Scrub Nurse to join our amazing and supportive team in our prestige private Hounslow Eye Hospital. Main duties of the job
The job holder will be responsible for participating in all aspects of the Ophthalmic Surgical pathway at Optegra. They will provide excellent care to all patients, with specific responsibility for providing skilled clinical and technical assistance as a member of the operating theatre team, and also may include peri-operative and post-operative care in the surgical and refractive suite of the hospital, and assisting with minor operations.
Job responsibilities
1. Assemble, check and prepare the appropriate surgical equipment and consumables for procedures.
2. Coordinate the use of the supplies and equipment during a list ensuring the equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner.
3. Act in the role of the scrub practitioner, undertaking all activities within that role in a professional and proficient manner.
4. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team, providing appropriate surgical instrumentation and equipment.
5. Take responsibility to ensure all surgical equipment is disposed of correctly including ensuring appropriate decontamination and sterilisation of reusable equipment is carried out and can be evidenced.
6. Monitor consumables, replenishing as required and confirming reordering requirements as appropriate.
7. Ensure all documentation for traceability is effectively completed.
8. Help to control and minimise the risk of cross infection by following the organisations Uniform Policy, and AFPP guidelines 2011, all procedures, policies and guidelines for the maintenance of a clean working environment, including decontamination and sterilisation of equipment.
9. Use clinical judgement and analytical skills to pro-actively identify potential problems, with special regard for surgical instrumentation, turn around times for decontamination and sterilisation of reusable items.
10. Have an awareness of the patient specific requirements for each case including lenses or other bespoke items and ensure the Theatre Team Lead and or Head of Clinical Services is aware of any issues.
11. Work with Consultant supporting them and delivering excellent care to patients during their clinical pathway.
12. Provide effective hand over of key information to recovery staff to facilitate safe and effective discharge of the patient.
13. Provide effective communication to patients as part of the clinical competency framework and holistic care of patients.
14. Provide clinical advice for staff, patients and their carers, within level of competency.
15. Administer drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines for the Standards for Medicines Management 2008.
16. Maintain an awareness of the need to deliver care in a manner which demonstrates dignity and respect, this includes the provision of an appropriate level of privacy at all times.
17. Provide initial emergency care as required within level of competency and training.
18. Ensure that all clinical documentation is completed legibly and comprehensively to agreed organisational and NMC / HPC standards and guidelines.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Be a Registered General Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner
* Have a current NMC/ODP registration with no restrictions
* A qualification in Ophthalmology or Peri operative care
* General Theatre and/or Day Surgery - scrub & circulating - minimum 12 months (recent)
* Previous experience in an Ophthalmology Theatre
