Due to the award of a new contract with DAERA in Northern Ireland, we are looking for veterinarians to join our team. Tasks/Duties The Portal Official Veterinarian will be required to be competent and able to undertake the full range of OV inspection and verification activities in accordance with and as specified in Official Controls Regulation (EU) 2017/625 (OCR) and other relevant legislation at NI SPS Inspection facilities: Inspection of vessel manifest: assessing each ship manifest and deciding which consignments should be detained for further checks. Mailbox supervision and promptly act upon received emails, answering requests and queries as appropriate, or forwarding them to the relevant responsible person. Inspect animals and animal products: that arrives at the SPS Inspection facility as per legislative requirements. Identify and report potential public or animal health risks posed by animals or animal products, including diseases, parasites, and any other issues. Ensure animals and animal products compliance with import/export regulations. This includes verifying documentation, health certificates, and other requirements to permit timely validation. Implement and oversee biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of disease. This includes disinfection protocols and quarantine procedures. Collaborate with other officials (customs agents, border control agents, and other competent authority officials – FSA, Local Authorities, Defra, APHA – to ensure that all animals, animal products and plant products are properly inspected. Provide advice and guidance to importers, exporters, and other relevant stakeholders on animal health and welfare issues as required. This includes regulations and requirements related to animal health and welfare. Monitor animal welfare, during transport and while they are at the SPS Inspection facility. They must ensure that the animals are treated humanely, and their needs are met. Carry out testing and sampling, as required, of animals and animal products to detect the presence of diseases or other health risks. Supervision and prioritisation of work allocation in collaboration with the portal team (inspectors and industrial staff). Accountable for the duty team’s performance, to guide and train their team to increase performance and confidence to perform tasks effectively. Aim to facilitate the free flow of goods and adopt a firm, fair and reasonable approach to enforcement guided by existing protocols and focusing on persistent/serious non-compliance(s) and risks to animal and public health. Set a strong example in work ethic and behaviour. Assist the DVO and other senior staff in support of the inspection process as requested. Skills/Qualifications Required and Requisites Veterinary medicine degree. As the requests require a fast mobilisation, the candidates will need to hold the following qualifications per role (of those listed above): Full membership of The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; DAERA Position: Ideally experience as Portal OV or in Export Health Certification of Products of Animal Origin to EU and/or non-EU countries. Able to start working by the 01/02/2025 or as soon as possible. UK or EEA citizens with right to work in the UK.
