Thames & Hudson publishes beautiful books that opens doors onto all aspects of culture. Our list includes titles on art, architecture, design, photography, fashion, music and popular culture, history and archaeology, and a programme of innovative books for children.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced children’s non-fiction book designer with a strong creative vision to work on our award-winning list.
You will collaborate closely with the editorial team and the Children’s Art Director to design and help manage our expanding list of non-fiction, picture, novelty and activity books.
You will enjoy the process of creating outstanding covers and layouts alongside discovering, commissioning and nurturing illustration talent.
Amongst other tasks, you will be:
5. Interpreting briefs and producing creative and effective designs for the target age group
6. Driving projects through all stages of design from initial brief to final print
7. Shaping new development ideas
8. Ensuring artwork is set up flawlessly, with files suitable for co-editions
9. Working closely with the Production team to coordinate reprographic work
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
10. Expert in Adobe CC suite
11. Excellent problem-solving skills
12. The ability to transform text supplied by an editor into an appealing visual book layout
13. Confident in communicating ideas within the creative team
14. Proven ability to roughly sketch and plot out ideas prior to commissioning an illustrator
15. Experience discovering and commissioning new and established illustrators
16. A flexible and adaptable approach to feedback
17. Ability to multitask and manage new development leading up to a book fair
18. Solid working experience of the printing process and cover finishes
19. Excellent artworking skills to provide print ready files
20. An awareness of current design trends and approaches in children’s publishing
