Fixed term to cover maternity leave from 28th April 2025 - 27th April 2026.
This post has been created to provide dedicated support to the Urology Surgical service at UHNM.
You will join an enthusiastic and dedicated team, working alongside the Consultants, Specialist Registrars, other Specialty doctors and a very experienced team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists. The post holder will gain a wide range of experience in all aspects of urological work.
You will be working with Consultant-led teams and will be responsible for the management of acute urology admissions. You will also be responsible for being part of a general outpatient's team. The post incorporates on-call commitments, surgical training, research, and audit work. The post will be comparable to current ST posts with respect to responsibilities, audit, and opportunities for training. The post holder would have designated supervised theatre sessions.
The Urology Department at the University Hospital of North Midlands provides a broad range of specialist urological training in areas such as specialist Oncological, Laparoscopic, Robotic Surgery, and Lithotripsy services. The training provided in this post is very flexible according to the needs of the post holder, but in particular, it would suit trainees wishing to pursue a career in Urology and in the process of applying for Higher Urological Training.
You would be assigned to a Consultant within the team, similarly to the Specialist Registrars. A typical job plan would consist of two clinics, one flexible cystoscopy list, an all-day theatre list, some flexible sessions, and potentially a day case list. There would be ample opportunities for research and other academic activities. There is a benign and cancer MDT and the candidate is expected to attend and positively contribute.
The list of duties and responsibilities given above is not an exhaustive list and you may be asked to undertake other duties in line with the overall purpose and nature of the post as may be required from time to time.
Division: Surgical.
This job description reflects core activities of a post at a particular time. The trust expects that all staff will recognise this and adopt a flexible approach to work.
The post holder will be working with a team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Trust Doctors, Specialty Trainees, Core Trainees, and Foundation Trainees. Each post has a generic clinical component in the relevant area. In addition, the post holder will have an agreed experience in a subspecialty (depending on availability) including outpatient clinics, ward cover, specialist in-patient reviews and procedures, audit, and research. It is prudent to be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
The precise role within each team and the proportion of clinical time spent between the two components would depend on previous clinical experience and qualifications of the candidate and the sub-specialty chosen. For candidates with substantial experience in trauma and orthopaedics and FRCS or equivalent qualifications, advanced training positions can be offered depending on assessment at interview as well as knowledge, skills, and aptitude as well as previous competencies achieved in the specialty.
