Abbeyfield Living Society is looking for a Cook at Halcyon House, a care and nursing home for older people in the heart of the village of Formby in Merseyside.
The role involves cooking breakfasts and preparing cereal for the residents, while lunch and tea time meals are prepared using nutritious ready-made meals from Apetitio.
You will have 2 members of kitchen staff to provide support to you in the kitchen.
Pay: £12.58 p/h
Hours: 40 hours a week. Shift times are 7:30 am till 5:30 pm.
Rota: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday

The Role of Cook
* As a Cook, you’ll need a relevant Certificate in Food Hygiene or be prepared to obtain one within the first three months in the role. You should have demonstrable experience of cooking varied, healthy, and safe meals for large groups (twelve or more, and sometimes up to 20), on a regular basis.
* You must be able to communicate and interact well with people and work productively as part of a team. A good standard of reading and writing is essential.
* You should be methodical and highly organized; keeping your kitchen and equipment clean and tidy, with an effective method of stock rotation.
* Demonstrating empathy and understanding of the nutritional needs of older people is important.
About You
* In consultation with residents and staff, you'll create healthy balanced menus that reflect the needs and preferences of residents.
* You’ll plan, prepare, and cook residents’ meals from the agreed menu, considering personal preferences or recognized dietary requirements (e.g., diabetes).
* You’ll ensure a safe and sufficient supply of catering products by developing a system for timely ordering of supplies. Good stock control will require you to record catering orders and deliveries using supplied documentation for checks and audits.
* Maintaining effective stock rotation and control is paramount to managing catering costs within the agreed budget.
* You will ensure the safe and proper use of catering equipment and report any defects to management. Adhering to kitchen cleaning procedures and schedules in accordance with Environmental Health standards is essential for keeping the kitchen and store areas clean and hygienic.
* Correct use of all equipment and products in line with COSHH requirements is key, and you will keep all COSHH assessments under review. You will also participate in and supervise the completion of all relevant records related to food safety.
Please note this role requires eligibility to work in the UK, two satisfactory employment references, and an Enhanced DBS check, the cost of which will be met by Abbeyfield.
