About the role
As a Specialist Skills Practitioner, you will develop, guide, inspire and support learners through a combination of practical, remote, and classroom-based learning sessions. You will provide learners with a high-quality learning experience and support them to become competent and confident employees who understand the next steps required to achieve their career goals.
Day-to-day duties
1. Responsible for Functional Skills and Specialist Skills curriculum development and delivery.
2. Facilitate initial and diagnostic assessments, advice and guidance, arranging additional support as needed.
3. Provide effective SEN support, working with learners to determine their needs and improving their ability to learn new skills.
4. Monitor the progress and achievement of Functional Skills, producing reports for senior leaders and employers.
5. Work closely with vocational trainers to collaboratively deliver Functional Skills across all apprenticeship programmes.
6. Collaborate with employees within apprenticeships, promoting ‘stretch and challenge’ teaching approach for all learners.
7. Develop resources for Functional Skills in English and Maths to support colleagues.
8. Prepare learners for Functional Skills English and Maths exams, coordinating with stakeholders for all examination requirements.
9. Support the recruitment, retention and achievement of learners.
10. Provide information, advice and guidance to learners and prospective learners to support their aspirations and career goals.
11. Strengthen links with key stakeholders, such as employers and sector representatives.
12. Prepare and lead Functional Skills and SEN training sessions with practitioners and wider support staff.
13. Assess the specific educational needs of learners with disabilities and provide recommendations for their support.
14. Provide support to learners with learning difficulties in the classroom and workplace and facilitate referrals for external support from therapists, medical specialists or tutors.
15. Ensure all training environments are equipped with adequate resources to support special educational needs.
16. Where relevant, engage in marketing activities with employers and the wider community in line with GTG strategies.
Essential skills
1. Minimum three years’ occupational experience undertaking support of SEN for learners and colleagues
2. Level 3 English and maths qualifications
3. Level 4 teaching qualification
4. Understanding of safeguarding in an educational setting (including Prevent)
5. Good understanding of providing education to children and adults
6. Good standard of IT and administrative skills
7. Display initiative, be positive and enthusiastic
8. Be flexible and responsive to employer needs
9. Demonstrate a commitment to equality and diversity, customer service and quality assurance
10. Excellent communications skills
11. A team player
12. Demonstrate a high level of professional behaviour
13. Excellent presentation skills
14. Ability to respect confidentiality
15. Demonstrate a commitment to the process of continuous review and improvement
16. Flexible approach, within reason, to working times in line with GTG’s needs
17. A current full driving licence

1. Level 3 IAG qualification
2. Level 3 coaching qualification
