Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Carpentry Superintendent, or other appropriate employee, performs a variety of skilled carpentry work in residential and/or light commercial construction, maintenance, alternation or rehabilitation and repair activities in assigned projects, which may include remodeling and new construction. Performs related work as required. Inspects and certifies work in compliance with applicable building codes. Assists in training apprentices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs skilled carpentry activities depending upon assignment, including trade activities such as rough and finished carpentry work from beginning to end for new construction, maintenance and/or repair.
2. Performs minor plumbing, welding, and electrical work.
3. Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, diagrams or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions, time, equipment, and materials required for a job.
4. Uses hand and power tools and other equipment to install structures and fixtures, such as windows, doors, insulation, drywall, ceiling, roofing, tiles, frames, flooring, trim, and hardware.
5. Builds or repairs cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, and power tools.
6. Removes damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repairs or replaces, using hand or power tools.
7. Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
8. Maintains accurate records, documents actions, and reports.
9. May perform janitorial duties on the grounds and in facilities before or after construction work.
10. Travels to the villages on the Arctic Slope when assigned.
11. Must be able to work well with coworkers, clients, and community members. Must be able to conduct yourself properly as a TNHA employee at all times, especially when traveling on TNHA business.
12. Provides on-the-job training for maintenance personnel and/or local apprentices in general skills of the carpentry trade.
13. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
14. Observes TNHA safety rules and regulations, policies and procedures.
15. Prepares and submits written work cost estimates, material lists and reports.
16. Works independently, accurately, and detailed in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
17. Performs basic and complex calculations, planning, and monitoring for projects as needed.
18. Maintains complete confidentiality of all information obtained through professional and client interactions.
19. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

Required:
1. High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
2. Five (5) years of work experience in carpentry within all phases of residential construction, maintenance, and repair.
3. Knowledge of the principles in carpentry and construction trade.
4. Knowledge of residential construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety.
5. Proficient at stain-grade trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, set windows, layout for steps and common rafters, read blueprints, and utilization or appropriate math and analytical skills necessary to do materials estimates.
6. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures; knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production or precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
7. Reasoning skills to include ability to solve practical problems where only limited information exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
8. Comfortable traveling by small aircraft to outlying Arctic Slope villages.
9. Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets TNHA insurance criteria.
Preferred:
1. Alaskan /American Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
2. Ability to read, write, speak, and/or understand conversational Inupiaq.
3. Two (2) years of Arctic work experience.
4. 10-hour OSHA Construction certification.
5. Knowledge of Arctic residential construction methods.
Physical Demands: This role frequently involves working outside in cold weather and requires regular physical activity, including heavy lifting. It also involves frequent movement, such as walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and climbing. Visual acuity for reaching and operating equipment is required. This is a safety-sensitive position, requiring alertness and adherence to safety protocols at all times.
Work Environment: The work environment is both indoor and outdoor settings, often exposed to cold weather conditions. It may involve working around heavy machinery and in areas with varying noise levels.
