Server Engineer Location: Hereford / Malvern Salary: Negotiable Overview of Role Our client is a niche Managed Service Provider with a Head Office based in Alton, Hampshire, who are committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors. They are currently looking for an experienced Server Engineer to work onsite, 5 days per week, at a secure site in Hereford / Malvern. As a Server Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise, operational support, and contributing to the design, implementation, and maintenance of secure and resilient server infrastructures. They are looking for an SFIA Level 4 engineer to fill this role. Due to the security restrictions of this role, applicants need to hold, or be able to obtain, the necessary security clearance level of DV (SC with the ability to obtain DV will be considered). Please refer to the Government website on UK Security Vetting for further information. The role may require travel to various sites within the UK which will require overnight stays. Responsibilities: Install, configure, and maintain Windows & Linux servers. Manage virtualised environments (VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix, KVM). Apply security hardening, patches, and updates per MoD JSP 440 & DCPP policies. Conduct risk assessments, security audits, and vulnerability management. Provide 3rd-line support, diagnose, and resolve server/network issues. Implement backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans. Automate deployments and system management using PowerShell, Bash, Python, Ansible, Puppet, SCCM, or Terraform. Support accreditation processes (DEFSTAN 05-138) and security compliance. Collaborate with network & cybersecurity teams to maintain a robust infrastructure. Participate in on-call rotations for mission-critical systems. Requirements: Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) & Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu) expertise. Strong knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy. Experience with cloud solutions (Azure, AWS, MoD Cloud, OpenStack). Familiarity with networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls). Understanding of zero-trust security, MFA, and identity management. Experience in technical documentation and compliance reporting. Ability to work in classified defence environments, following strict security protocols.
