Research Support Officer
Starting Salary £40,832 to £45,589 per annum
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is seeking to employ an Electron Microscopy (EM) Research Support Officer. The successful candidate will help to run, maintain, and develop the world-leading EM Facility at the LMB, Cambridge, UK. The EM Facility supports around 170 active users who apply single particle electron cryo-microscopy (cryoEM) and electron-cryo tomography (cryoET) to study important biological problems.
The Facility houses a series of latest-generation EM instruments including four 300keV Titan-Krios transmission EMs (TEMs), a 200keV Glacios TEM, and four focused ion beam scanning EMs (FIB-SEMs) including an Arctis and access to a Hydra. Each microscope is configured with the latest software. The Facility also supports and maintains a broad range of specimen preparation equipment. Together these resources enable our EM users to collect high throughput cryoEM data and to regularly achieve near atomic resolution.
The Facility hosts and participates in research programmes developing new hardware and software for cryo-EM and cryo-ET. Members of the Facility can also collaborate with users on research projects of mutual interest.
Together with the other members of the Facility, the post-holder will assist with the day-to-day provision of the Facility’s services including:
1. Taking joint responsibility for ensuring that runs smoothly and to a high standard;
2. Addressing and resolving hardware and software problems;
3. Assisting with upkeep and maintenance of EM hardware and software including writing scripts;
4. Advising, supporting, and training users;
5. Helping with specimen preparation, data collection, and image analysis.
The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in biological specimen preparation and operating TEMs. Experience using cryo-FIB-SEMs would be an advantage. You will have either a PhD in a relevant subject or an equivalent level of experience or training in a relevant area. You will be self-motivated, have good IT skills and excellent interpersonal and team working skills, be passionate about EM, and have the desire to learn new techniques and to work in a service-orientated facility.
The LMB has a collaborative working culture and state-of-the-art building based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. We have on-site parking, cycle enclosures and excellent public transport links to the site. We have a staff restaurant with roof terrace, on-site nursery, sports and social facilities. You will be eligible to join our defined benefit pension scheme with an employer contribution of 16%, holiday entitlement of 40.5 days (including bank holidays and privilege days) and a generous employee discount scheme. We are also committed to providing training and development opportunities including support towards role-related qualifications.
The LMB is a world-class research institute within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is nine research councils, working together across all disciplines and sectors. More information can be found at www.ukri.org and www.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk.
