Daniela Schlingmann Literary Scouting Ltd works with a host of outstanding international publishers around the world to find the very best of fiction, non-fiction and children's books from the UK and the US to be published in translation, and to be adapted for film and TV
The role
We are small, friendly and nurturing team looking for an energetic and hard-working Associate Scout to work alongside our Children's and YA Scout. You will help to report back on the very best of children's and YA fiction and non-fiction from the UK and US to our many and varied international translation clients and our film and TV clients. You'll talk to UK and US editors, agents and rights agents, and communicate with our clients on a daily basis. As children's scouting at DSLS develops, there will be room to grow a long-term career in a particularly exciting part of the publishing industry.
The ideal candidate
- Experience in and passion for children's and young adult fiction and non-fiction.
- 1-2 years' experience in the children's publishing industry - whether bookselling, licensing, or any agency or publisher department such as rights or editorial.
- As such, a network of relevant contacts would be a plus.
- Excellent team-working skills to fit in our close-knit company, with the ability and willingness to use your particular strengths and skills to contribute to wider group projects with colleagues.
- Able to exercise good judgement and remain cool-headed in a fast-paced working environment.
- A fast and precise reader, able to report confidently and clearly on the content, style and commercial value of titles.
- Broad interest in the publishing industry as a whole and its moving parts.
- Foreign languages are an advantage, as is dual European-British or US-British citizenship.
Responsibilities and duties
- Reading submissions and writing and proofing related reports.
- Answering client queries regarding materials and correct contacts.
- Entering key information onto our database, requesting and chasing materials, logging responses from clients.
- Collaborating with the children's scout to take meetings and obtain information about key titles in advance of and in preparation for book fairs.
- Scheduling book fair appointments for both the DSLS team and our clients.
- Assisting with book fair organisation and attending as required.
- Representing DSLS by attending industry events, both virtual and physical, and growing a network of industry contacts.
- Following industry news and social media to report on market developments and industry changes in the UK and US.
- Providing miscellaneous children's scouting related admin support when required.

£23-25k dependent on experience
