Job Summary
Working under the direct supervision of practice nurses and in accordance with specific PCN guidelines and protocols. The post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse or following strict protocols for certain conditions.
Following additional training, the role will include completing NHS Health Checks, blood pressure readings and ECGs.
This role does not require previous clinical training and competencies; training will be given to the successful candidate.
Main Duties of the Job
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample.
2. Collection of blood samples in accordance with training and procedures.
3. Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers.
4. Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
5. Checking patient identification against GP nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible.
6. Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure.
7. Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
8. Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.
9. Notifying the GP nurse of any significant patient issues.
10. Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team.
11. Sterilise equipment.
12. Doing NHS health checks.
13. Restock consulting rooms.
14. Do health promotion or health education work.
