The Department The Medical Staffing establishment of the Department is 12 Consultants, 1 CESR fellow, 1 Specialty Doctor, 8 Specialty Registrars (ST3 and above) rotating within the region, 1 ST1/2 and 6 GP Trainees. The Post The Gynaecological Service The gynaecological inpatient unit is located on Ward B11. At present, there are 14 beds. A full range of gynaecology procedures are provided including advanced laparoscopic and urogynaecology surgery, advanced ambulatory procedures and colposcopy. We are a cancer unit offering early stage cancer surgery, with the advanced surgery being performed at our local cancer centres in Sheffield. There is a very active ambulatory care unit performing novasure and other outpatient techniques. There is specific Consultant-led practice in cervical pathology; oncology; fertility; ambulatory care and urogynaecology; and full facilities are available for the support of minimal access gynaecological surgery. There are also other specialist clinics including perineal trauma clinic, vulval, pregnancy advisory and abortion care, joint endocrine clinic and psychosexual clinics. A nurse lead team with consultant supervision supports early pregnancy assessment. The Obstetric Service The Obstetric unit conducts approximately 2600 2700 deliveries per year. The Maternity Unit currently has 23 beds and a Level 2 neonatal unit. Consultant presence on the Delivery Suite is 62.5 hours a week. There are resident evening sessions with non-resident on call overnight. Antenatal practice is divided up into specific speciality clinics to which expectant mothers are allocated. The vast majority of routine and detailed scans are performed within the department. Consultant physicians and Nurse/midwife Specialists support specific antenatal clinics. The unit has specialist antenatal clinics, which include preterm, multiple pregnancy, diabetes, mental health, endocrine and haematology. The Neonatal Service The neonatal unit is designated as a Local Neonatal Unit (level 2) working in conjunction with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. There are 14 cots including 3 intensive/high dependency cots. The department works in close conjunction with the obstetric unit and the neonatal network to ensure effective care of extreme prematurity and complex antenatal problems. Work collaboratively with senior colleagues, to provide a service in obstetrics and gynaecology with responsibility for specific areas (such as certain MDTs lead roles) and generalist practice or sub specialisms as agreed with the Head of Department.
