Ipswich School has been listed as one of the top 100 schools in the country and is certainly one of the foremost independent schools in East Anglia. We were established prior to 1399 and moved to our present site in 1852. We have over 1100 pupils aged between 5 and 19 years and we are fully coeducational. The school operates a 5-day week, with representative sports played during the week and on Sundays.
This post is based at Westwood House, our Boarding House situated on Constitution Hill, Ipswich.
We are looking for a Catering Assistant to assist the Boarding House Chef with the preparation of the dining room prior to service, and the cleaning and tidying of the room after service, in accordance with the cleaning schedule. You will also be required to wash all kitchen equipment, cutlery and crockery used in the preparation of the meals served to pupils living at the School’s Boarding Houses.
Responsibilities:
* wash all kitchen tins and utensils in hot, soapy water and rinse well
* follow the daily cleaning schedule, ensuring that all equipment is cleaned on a regular basis and is kept in a clean and safe condition
* empty the rubbish bin regularly to avoid overflow and it becoming too heavy to lift safely
* clean crockery and cutlery to a high standard and clean and sanitise trays
* assist the boarding house Chef as directed with the preparation of the dining room prior to service and tidying of the room after service
* assist with the preparation of salads and desserts as required
* be polite and helpful to pupils and staff at all times
* ensure cruet sets are filled regularly and are clean before putting them on the tables
* ensure fresh juice is provided in the vending machine located in the dining room
* wear uniform issued as appropriate, and as directed by the Catering Manager. Jewellery should not be worn
* adhere to responsibilities under the school’s Health, Safety and Welfare Policy
* only use chemicals that are in the correct bottles, and ensure they are used correctly
* adhere to the C.O.S.H.H. regulations
* report any damaged or broken equipment
* work in a safe manner that does not endanger other colleagues
* ensure after service that the daily cleaning schedule is carried out, and that the work areas are left clean and tidy with surfaces sanitised, and all rubbish removed
* attend a basic hygiene course as required
* attend training in safeguarding children as required.
Person Specification:
You should have the following attributes:
* good inter-personal and team working skills
* reliability and punctuality
* experience in a catering or cleaning role would be beneficial.
Hours of work, pay and benefits:
* this is a permanent, part-time position to start as soon as possible, and is subject to satisfactory completion of a 6-month probationary period. The working hours are as follows during Ipswich School boarding term time: Monday to Friday 4.45 pm – 7.15pm (2.5 hours per day)
* a total of 12.5 hours per week, during Ipswich School (boarding) term time (36 weeks per annum)
* the hours for this post will be reviewed with the postholder around September 2025 as we review our Boarding catering location and other arrangements. The times worked may be subject to change at that time, in discussion with you, or you may be offered hours elsewhere in our catering team
* please note that after a school holiday period boarding students return to the Boarding House one or two days prior to the start of the new term, or half term, and you will be required to work on those days
* you will also be expected to work for one or two days prior to the start, and after the end of, each term (as instructed by the Catering Manager) to carry out a deep clean and you are always expected to work for 2 days prior to the start of the Michaelmas (Autumn) term for mandatory staff training
* the starting salary will be £5,827 per annum, which includes holiday pay. Salaries are paid over 12 months in arrears by BACS on the last working day of each month throughout the year and are reviewed annually in April, to coincide with the review of the National Living Wage
* meals are provided whilst on duty
* uniform is provided and should be worn at all times
* staff are able to use the school’s swimming pool and fitness gym (in compliance with appropriate rules and regulations)
