To work as a highly specialist cardiac physiologist ideally in the fields of both echocardiography and pacing supporting the wider MDT in delivering safe, effective and efficient cardiology services within Somerset Foundation Trust. To work as an independent practitioner, accountable for own professional actions in performing and reporting on a full range of diagnostic procedures, assisting clinicians in the management of service users. The role includes teaching, assessment and supervision of junior physiologists/healthcare scientists, medical students, and at times qualified medical staff. Work alongside clinical leads and service manager in the continued development of the diagnostic and pacing services taking a proactive approach in managing capacity and demand of services on a day to day basis. To review and continually develop the diagnostic and pacing service as necessary in keeping with service demand also to help in the future planning of the echo service.
Main duties of the job
Provide specialist expertise across a range of standard transthoracic echocardiography and support with willingness to train if required, in for example transoesophageal, stress, contrast, 3D, paediatric and congenital echo. Independently report on investigations undertaken, be accountable for own working standards and time management. Offer advice to referring clinician as appropriate following guidelines. Deliver appropriate patient care, monitor and respond appropriately to changes in a patient's clinical status. The post holder will provide advice, supervision and training to medical staff and students on equipment use and procedure technique. Supervision of these staff may be up to and beyond BSE accreditation level. The post holder may be required to be actively involved with PTP/STP students during their course, providing supervised training, assessment and guidance on a one to one basis and mentorship. The post holder will be required to make a clinical judgement of a patient based on medical history or the results of their echo. The post holder would need to be confident in interpreting data and alerting referring medical staff of urgent clinical problems.
