About The Role
Are you passionate about carbon reduction and have a good understanding of sustainable engineering? Then you could be our next Carbon Technical Lead for the National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) business, right at the heart of the energy transition to net zero.
This is an exciting opportunity to help National Grid reduce its own impact on global warming. You'll be leading a team of carbon specialists and overseeing the development and implementation of our carbon strategy and roadmap that will make a real difference to how carbon management is engineered and embedded within our business. This will cover both action on our Science Based Target, scope 3 emissions, low carbon construction and carbon compensation.
Working with both internal and external stakeholders to exert influence and leadership in our approach, you’ll add expertise, value and resilience to NGET whilst enhancing its reputation. You will be integral to achieving our carbon commitments in all that we do, as detailed in the Environmental Action Plan agreed with Ofgem, providing support to the NGET business and its supply chain in delivering them. You will also work to define the governance and structure needed to ensure NGET is ready to deliver on its commitments ahead of the next regulatory period starting in 2026.
You'll provide the business with the necessary tools to embed carbon management principles within all stages of development and delivery, deliver specialist coaching, advice, training and support to drive, motivate, inspire and encourage managers, staff and the supply chain to promote and sustain continual improvement.
By bringing your passion to this role, you'll transform behaviours and demonstrate how National Grid takes sustainable actions. You'll be a pivotal member of a high-performing team that builds our reputation for professionalism, objectivity, integrity and most importantly, delivering the right results.
This role is offered as a fixed term contract of up to 12 months to cover maternity leave.
As part of our hybrid working approach, the role offers a mix of office working (base location flexible) and home working. Some travel is required.
What You'll Need
With a passion for embedding a sustainability culture, an understanding of design principles for sustainable engineering, excellent organisational, planning and time management skills, you'll be able to motivate others through your own example, promoting the idea of continual improvement.
Personally committed to finding new ways of working in conjunction with others to achieve business goals, you'll have a broad appreciation of how sustainability can help achieve business objectives. With this drive and enthusiasm, you will be committed to stakeholder satisfaction and performance improvement. Resilience, confidence and courage to challenge behaviours and issues is essential.
A thorough knowledge of carbon and climate change, ideally with experience of GHG accounting and reporting and Whole life carbon assessments. Knowledge of carbon and nature markets would be beneficial but not required. Excellent data management, report writing skills, and the ability to integrate information effectively, think strategically and engage stakeholders across the organisation is key to this role. Line management experience is preferred with a proven record of coaching and supporting your team.
With extensive relevant industry experience and a suitable academic qualification such as Environmental Engineering Degree, Diploma or equivalent, membership of a professional body is preferred.
