Main duties of the job
1. To be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence based care.
2. To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to.
3. To communicate with patients and significant others with empathy and reassurance regarding assessment, care and treatment.
4. To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriate documentation.
5. To facilitate early discharge planning enabling appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital, making referrals and providing information to community services, in order to achieve a safe and timely discharge from hospital.
6. Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures.
7. Supervise junior staff, or unqualified staff, in all aspects of care. Ensure that staff are knowledgeable.
8. To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to promote good communication and a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
9. To participate in the audit of the principles of the Essence of Care benchmarking process, and implement the action plans as required.
10. To work with Lead and Senior Nurses, Bed Managers, Admissions and Infection Control to ensure optimal bed utilisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Within this role, some of the duties you will be expected to carry out include:
* To have successfully completed the Trust’s preceptorship programme (applicable only to newly qualified and return to practice Registered Nurses).
* Maintain a high standard of nursing care applying evidence-based practice.
* Carry out assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care and escalate any clinical concerns to a senior nurse as required.
* Carry out the daily personal individualised care of patients.
* Maintain accurate records.
* Update patient administration systems e.g. PAS to ensure real time data collection and confidentiality.
* Effectively use information technology for the benefit of patient care in accordance with Trust Policy.
* Communicate with patients, clients and relatives on emotional and sensitive issues.
* To be competent in managing emergency situations including directing other members of the team.
* To be competent in clinical skills including enhanced practice relevant to the clinical area.
* Contribute to the philosophy and continuous development of the clinical area.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with the NMC or working towards and due to qualify in the next six months.
* Degree/Diploma in Nursing or equivalent.
* Teaching and Assessing qualification.
Experience
* Relevant experience in the past 12-18 months of looking after patients in a healthcare environment.
* Relevant Post-Registration clinical experience.
Skills, abilities, and knowledge
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Confident and calm attitude with an ability to work under pressure.
* Ability to provide holistic nursing care.
* Ability to use basic IT skills.
* Accurate documentation with attention to detail.
* Knowledge of professional issues in nursing incorporating NMC and IPAC.
* Clinical Governance experience.
