BPAS are looking for a Consultant Anaesthetist to join us on a practising privileges basis at our unit in Birmingham South on Thursdays and Fridays.
BPAS is an independent healthcare charity which has been advocating and caring for women and couples who decide to end a pregnancy for more than 50 years. We are the leading specialists of abortion advice and treatment in the UK, taking care of almost 80,000 women each year in over 50 clinics nationwide. Nearly all the women we see have their care paid for by the NHS.
As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you will provide deep procedural sedation for patients accessing abortion care at our Birmingham South unit. You will manage two surgical lists on Thursdays and Fridays, ensuring safe and effective care throughout every stage of the patients journey.
This includes delivering sedation for procedures up to the legal gestational limit, responding to emergencies, and supporting staff to maintain the highest standards of patient-centred care.
About You
You will be a highly skilled and experienced professional with FRCA or FFARCS (Ireland) qualifications, current ALS certification, and registration with the GMC. With at least five years in a consultant grade and experience within a substantive consultant contract, you'll have a broad-based background in anaesthesia and sedation, remaining calm and self-reliant under pressure.
Main duties of the job
* Complete patient assessment and pre-treatment if necessary including all statutory documentation
* Provision of deep procedural sedation for procedures up to and inclusive of a gestation of 23+6 weeks
* Provision of deep procedural sedation for clients up to and inclusive of 39.9 BMI
* Ensure the management of emergency situations e.g. airway, bleeding
* Be present in the operating room throughout the procedure and remain on site until the patient has been discharged from the recovery room
* Ensure that patients are closely observed, and appropriate observation recorded until the client regains full consciousness
* Identify the early onset of potential problems and implement immediate and appropriate actions
* Provide support, advice and guidance to nursing staff in the management of unexpected outcomes
We are also looking for:
* Candidates who are trained in or have experience of emergency transfer of patients
* Candidates who are trained in the management of emergency airway techniques
