Enhanced Practitioner Cancer Outreach & Cancer of Unknown Primary

The post-holder will act as a Enhanced Practitioner for patients admitted to the Trust with an oncological emergency, a suspected cancer diagnosis, and complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) or with a cancer of unknown primary. The post-holder will continually develop, implement and evaluate the Cancer outreach service to improve and maintain standards of patient care and promote a seamless service within a multi-professional framework. Be a clinical expert in Cancer outreach and Cancer of Unknown primary with excellent communication skills. The role requires the ability to work autonomously and independently but within an integrated collaborative team.
Main duties of the job
* Ensure their role reflects the core components of the Enhanced Practitioner which includes: clinical practice, management / organisation, education, research and audit, taking into account the national cancer agenda and its impact on service delivery.
* Delivers quality care by providing evidence-based individualised and personalised care.
* Be a point of contact for patients with a suspected cancer diagnosis / a cancer of unknown primary and patients admitted with complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment or an oncological emergency.
* Act as a role model demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership to others.
* Use advanced communication skills when discussing diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis with patients with a new cancer diagnosis / suspected cancer diagnosis.
* Implement and evaluate person-centred care for all patients.
* Maintain clinical skills in physical assessment.
* Attend consultant ward rounds to review inpatients admitted with a suspected cancer diagnosis / a cancer of unknown primary and patients admitted with complications of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment or an oncological emergency.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Clinical knowledge and understanding of Cancer outreach Services.
* Understanding of acute oncological emergencies and their treatment management.
* Knowledge of relevant NHS legislation to include clinical governance/COSHH/Health and Safety/Infection Control/Clinical Waste/Manual Handling/Confidentiality/Data Protection Act.
* Ability to work effectively in an emotionally demanding environment.
* Understand the role of the MDTs.
* Experience of multi-professional working.
* Experience of teaching and supervising junior staff.
* Evidence of good communication skills.
* Up-to-date knowledge of current evidence-based practice in Haematology/Cancer and Acute Oncology Services and/or urgent/emergency care.
* Relevant post-registration experience, at Band 5 or above in Cancer Services including Acute Oncology and Emergency care.
* Experience of cannulation, venepuncture, and SACT administration.
* Ability to support and influence change.
* Experience of audit and research.

Qualifications and Training
* Registered Nurse.
* First level degree in related subject or undertaking a Degree Pathway.
* Post basic qualification in cancer care willing to work towards it.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* Advanced communication skills training or prepared to work towards.
* Non-Medical Prescribing or willingness to work towards.
* PACR or willingness to work towards.
* PADRAP or willingness to work towards.
* Evidence of masters level academic study or willingness to work towards Masters (in relevant health-related subject).
* Recognised teaching qualification or prepared to work towards.
* Research qualification.
* Management or Leadership Qualification.
* National SACT passport or willingness to undertake.
* Ability to undertake advanced communication skills including the breaking of bad news.
* Ability to share complex details in a non-jargon way.
* Ability to offer guidance and advice to empower the patient to make the right decisions for their safety managing toxicities of SACT.
* Ability to undertake the UKONS Triage Assessment and follow nationally and locally agreed guidelines to the care of oncological emergencies or willingness to develop the skills.
* Ability to manage the working day with unpredictable workload due to the emergency element of the role.
* Ability to use time to develop and educate staff through UKONS Triage Teaching for specific cancer pathway.
