Modernity is seeking a gallery/showroom manager to join its team in London as maternity cover.
Location: London showroom
Schedule: Four days per week, with the ability to move to a full-time role if needed.
Weekdays: 9:30 to 18:00
Saturdays: 12:00 to 17:00 (Two Saturdays per month, otherwise working days are Monday to Thursday.)
This is a temporary contract covering maternity leave up until 8 October 2025. There may be the option to extend depending on the circumstances.
Modernity specialises in the collection and sale of rare and high-grade furniture, ceramics, glass, lighting and jewellery by the most renowned Nordic designers of the 20th century. The large collection includes design classics by Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, Axel Salto, and Berndt Friberg, as well as some outstanding unique pieces. With a strong emphasis on post-war design, Modernity has throughout the years established itself as one of the leading galleries in northern Europe.
Modernity opened a London office in September 2019, within walking distance of Mayfair’s major galleries, and this has proven to be a great success. To build on this, Modernity opened a new space in Belgravia, Pimlico Road, in January 2023, and is looking for a gallery manager to oversee all aspects of the day-to-day running of the space and online presence. This person will be key in developing the gallery’s client base, particularly that of trade, and working closely with the director to develop event and exhibition ideas.
Responsibilities
* Be the day-to-day face of the showroom.
* Work with the team to ensure the gallery is clean, tidy, and organised.
* Greet and assist clients, manage the main inbox, and answer phones.
* Manage enquiries in a timely manner.
* Deal with clients confidently and with gravitas face-to-face, by phone, and by email.
* Discuss works with clients and close sales; negotiate terms.
* Supervise shipping and correspondence with clients.
* Manage the database and proactively develop the client list, working with current clients.
* Collaborate with the UK Director to plan occasional events and outreach plans to develop the client base; proactively generate ideas for expanding the current client base (including meeting with decorators on a daily/weekly basis).
* Participate as part of the team at events and fairs as required, either abroad or locally in the UK.
* Deal with contractors and suppliers, ensuring the space is clean and tidy.
* Handle pre- and post-sale client liaising.
* Perform general business administration.
* Assist the Stockholm office if needed.
* Create and post content on Instagram.
* Assist with 1stdibs when required.
Person Specification
* Ability to generate business and develop Modernity’s client base, particularly focused on trade clients.
* Proactive mindset, able to create work and leads independently.
* Positive attitude and energetic, contributing to the gallery's atmosphere.
* Motivated self-starter with a good track record in a similar dealership, gallery, or auction house.
* Confident salesperson with a passion for art and/or design.
* Comfortable working alone and as part of a team.
* Proactive and ambitious character.
* Strong administrative and organisational skills.
* Physically fit and able to lift and move objects in the showroom and warehouse, with occasional visits to the warehouse in Wembley.
* Must have the right to work within the UK.
