Description We are growing our engineering team to deliver UK projects across a range of sectors including energy transition & resilience; nuclear & defence; water and rail and are seeking candidates for this discipline leadership position to manage and grow the existing team and provide technical leadership to the function. The Discipline Manager reports to the Director of Engineering and is responsible for technical and line management of the discipline and the delivery of engineering design on projects through its people, processes and systems. The Discipline Manager will be a member of the engineering management team which has overall responsibility for strategic engineering leadership across Costain and other Engineering Discipline Leads. This is a (hybrid) office based role is located at the Costain Engineering hub in Manchester with an expectation of office based working for two to three days per week. Short-term/notice travel to company, supplier or client offices or sites for business purposes may be required. Responsibilities Responsible for managing “people”, processes and team delivery performance for the Piping Engineering ad Design discipline. Lead by example, displaying the Company’s values and behaviours, and commitment to the highest standards of safe and ethical behaviour. Ensure personal and corporate compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental company policies including relevant legislation, client’s requirements and to work in such a manner not to cause personal harm or injury to fellow workers, client and subcontractors employees or the environment. Give advice and direction to ensure that the discipline delivers designs that are safe-by-design, sustainable, digitally enabled, cost-effective, compliant, technically sound and meet commercial delivery targets. Provide a consultative, technical expert role to internal and external clients. Monitor discipline delivery performance on projects and intervene to provide support where required. Approve, check and prepare design/engineering documentation in accordance with Company procedures and industry best practice, ensuring compliance with all relevant national and international codes, standards and legislative requirements. Responsible for ensuring engineering and design activities are delivered in line with Costain competencies, policies, and procedures and applicable industry standards, codes and regulations. Maintain up to date knowledge of latest technology and industry trends. Responsible for discipline corporate processes, including workflows, methods, competency, software systems and technical standards. Manage and develop related engineering and design capability using appropriate technology, design methods, engineering software and application of industry best practice. Ensure the discipline has the correct quality and quantity of competent personnel to match the needs of the company to execute tenders and projects Qualifications Minimum of 15 years experience in technical delivery and management roles in an engineering/consultancy environment Degree qualification in a relevant engineering subject. Experienced piping engineering technical specialist Recent UK project experience Understanding of whole delivery process from work winning to scheme handover in a variety of sectors Have strong knowledge of UK regulatory framework and global best practice for areas of focus, such as PSSR; PE(S)R/; Notified bodies; UKCA Marking, Pipe Stress, Manufacturing processes, Materials and Coatings. Strong safety, quality and environmental leadership focus Capable of carrying out complex tasks, problem diagnosis and the development of innovative technical solutions Collaborative, innovative and agile Experienced customer facing capability with an ability to develop and influence relationships Strong interpersonal skills and an effective communicator (written & verbal) Able to travel mainly across the UK and visit project sites / suppliers, at short notice occasionally Attention to detail, meticulous and methodical Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
