The opportunity:
The Portfolio Analytics team is a multi-functional empowered, creative and autonomous team within Markel International. Embedded within the underwriting business and represented in the Leadership Team, we focus on critical areas to achieve profitability and performance targets for a specialty lines insurer: Portfolio Management, Data, Analytics and Insights, and Pricing Model development.
The SPS team is designed to take advantage of the market trend towards bifurcation between lead and follow underwriting capacity. This standalone team aims to build a robust follow portfolio with a class-agnostic Underwriting strategy whilst leveraging the data benefits this provides. Facilities written within this team are cross-class and will contain CAT exposures.
What you’ll be doing:
In this role, you'll be responsible for providing actuarial analyses, including pricing, reserving, and reinsurance purchasing, to guide the strategy of the new Structured Portfolio Solutions (SPS) team. You'll also help build and maintain data pipelines to ensure efficient and up-to-date analysis.
You'll leverage market data to provide insights across Markel International and make recommendations to improve analyses and tools, enabling SPS underwriters to manage their portfolio effectively. Leading the development of the portfolio management framework for the SPS class and monitoring key performance drivers will be crucial to support underwriting and enhance performance.
Additionally, you'll develop strategic analytics, tools, and insights to optimize portfolios and advocate for data-driven decision-making. Collaboration with various support units, such as actuarial, underwriting operations, and ITS, will be essential to resolve issues and achieve business priorities. You'll also represent the Portfolio Analytics team, providing accurate and timely management information to leadership.
Our must-haves:
* Outstanding multi-modal communications skills along with strong data visualisation skills for disseminating management information to various levels across Markel
* Demonstrable experience in influencing and engaging with stakeholders using effective communication and ensuring consensus
* Able to clearly articulate complex strategies, techniques and ideas to senior leadership and underwriters across multiple product lines
* Possess both strong analytical depth, the ability to independently problem solve and put forward recommendations
* Understanding of Markel International products, classes of business and operations of the specialty insurance market
* Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering to agreed timelines projects and initiatives that require involvement from business leaders across the company
* Possess a detailed solid understanding of the Microsoft office suite, with a focus on Excel and become comfortable with manipulating and analysing large, complex sets of data.
* Experience with data visualisation programmes, database use (SQL) and an awareness of advanced analytics/data science would be desirable but not essential.
