Surrey Histology Hub in Guildford
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and suitably qualified HCPC registered, Histology BMS to join our large and friendly team.
Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services is a joint venture between The Royal Surrey County, Frimley Health, East Surrey Hospital, The Royal Berkshire Hospital and Ashford St Peter's Hospitals with the Surrey Histology hub at the RSCH processing some 110,000 surgical specimens per annum. The department has already undergone significant mergers and re-organisation over the past 5 years and is an exemplar site in terms of NHSI networks in line with NHS Improvement guidance.
The Surrey hub, based just off the A3 in Guildford, has recently undergone a £1M refurbishment and provides a modern and spacious laboratory space with the latest Roche H&E, special staining and IHC equipment installed. Full UKAS accreditation has been achieved and maintained for some years. The Surrey Histology side employs over 20 Pathologists, 30 Biomedical Scientists, 9 Associate Practitioners and 20 support grade staff on a Monday to Friday working pattern. The laboratory supports St Luke's Cancer Centre, a regional centre providing complex cancer surgery and radiotherapy and performs over 400 frozen sections per annum. There is an expansive Immunohistochemistry service, supported by Roche Diagnostics Ultra platforms, encompassing over 140 antibodies, skin immunofluorescence and in-situ hybridisation with a projected 95,000 tests per year
Main duties of the job
All BMS staff in the Surrey hub are to be trained to undertake dissection to category B and C in a sub-specialised manner, under the guidance of our Advanced Practitioner in Histological Dissection. It is the vision of the department to provide opportunities for BMS staff to progress into more complex dissection and BMS reporting over the coming years.
This vacancy seeks to identify an experienced and motivated BMS who can operate within our Senior team overseeing the daily management of the cut up and performing extended and advanced specimen dissection under the guidance of the Deputy Lead BMS/Advanced Practitioner. This is a junior management role with an expectation that significant expertise also exists in dissection. The role will include training of all grades of staff in laboratory practices and BMS staff in dissection. The successful candidate will rotate through the routine laboratory and be involved in all Senior BMS activities such as rota formation, recruitment and staff management such as appraisal.
The successful candidate will be able to meet all aspects of the published person specification, will have the ability to tailor the delivery of training needs to the individual, understand complex clinical information and be able to interpret and dissect specimens accordingly. They will be driven to continue their education and also to continue to improve the service we provide our patients.
