This is a new post based at Musgrove Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Taunton, Somerset and is central to our continuing reorganisation of the leadership, provision and planning for acute medicine within the Medical Services Group. The post holders should have extensive training and a major interest in acute medicine as ultimately they will provide clinical leadership and assist in the ongoing evolution of this essential key component of our emergency service. Whilst it is accepted that candidates may wish to pursue a medical sub-specialty interest in addition, acute medicine will form the major part of the successful candidate's direct clinical care activity. The posts will support the weekday running of the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and enable a senior acute physician weekday presence within the emergency department (ED), this will be in conjunction with the 6.4 WTE existing acute physicians on a rotational basis.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients with acute medical problems as outlined in the proposed programme. We are interested in appointing a motivated and highly competent doctor to these posts, as they will take on the task of developing acute medicine services within the broader vision of 'a high quality, constantly improving Trust, providing excellent clinical services'.
It is envisaged that the successful applicants will, in conjunction with the current post holders, be responsible for:
1. Consultant supervision of the acute medical unit
2. Consultant supervision of the existing ambulatory emergency care unit
3. Provide acute medicine presence and support within the emergency department
4. Participation in the medical on call rota (currently 1:21 weekdays and 1:7 split weekends).
5. Provide consultant level care for the winter pressure escalation beds under the care of acute medicine
