JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to: Nursing Services Manager
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Phlebotomist is accountable to the Nursing Services Manager.
To support the GPs and Practice Nursing Team in providing care and advice to patients and carers.
To support the surgery administration team in the preparation of patient documentation.
To provide a confidential and appropriate response to patients.
To liaise closely with Practice Nurses regarding clinical competence, training and development requirements.
The Phlebotomist will work as part of the Surgery team, at times without direct supervision, undertaking tasks delegated by the Nursing Services Manager, Practice Nurses, and GPs, working very closely and liaising with the Practice Nurses in particular.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To support the nursing and doctor team in providing care and advice to patients and carers, encouraging self-care and the achievement of independence, where appropriate. To support administration staff in preparation of accurate and up to date patient documentation.
1. To carry out phlebotomy.
2. To gain the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to administer basic life support if necessary.
3. To maintain a professional image and observe confidentiality at all times.
4. To maintain accurate records of patient documentation.
5. To maintain accurate, timely and legible records of patient care including data input and submission of statistical information as required.
6. To prepare and maintain clinical environments according to Health & Safety and Infection Control policies.
7. To contribute to the ordering, distribution and maintenance of equipment.
8. To feedback and report on the condition and welfare of patients to the appropriate clinician.
9. To participate in research and audit activity as appropriate.
10. To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required as a direct response to surgery requirements.
11. To work in accordance with policies, procedures and protocols recognised by Practice.

Qualifications
* Good standard of general education.
* GCSE Mathematics C or above.
* GCSE English C or above.
* Current First Aid Certificate.
* Venepuncture.
