The role
Rossendale Borough Council’s Operations Team is looking to appoint an Arborist Gardener to join their Green Spaces team.
The main duties of the role will involve tree climbing and maintenance, carrying out surveys, inspections and management of trees in winter; mowing and grounds maintenance throughout the growing season.
Qualifications
- Trained in minimum NPTC Chainsaw and related Operations categories C30, 31, 38 & 39
- Current driving licence with Category B+E or hold a licence issued on or before 31.12.96.
Duties and responsibilities
- Undertake tree felling, thinning and maintenance, using specialist equipment including chainsaws, chippers and elevated platforms. To perform aerial tree work as required.
- General grounds maintenance of the areas e.g. grass cutting, hedge trimming, clearing leaves and litter, clearing shrub beds, planting, pruning, seeding duties and constructional labouring.
- Specialist grounds maintenance tasks such as bowling green maintenance and preparation and planting/ stripping of formal and shrub beds.
- Use and maintenance of tools and equipment including powered hand tools such as pedestrian mowing equipment, strimmers, hedge trimmers and leaf blowers. The operation of other grounds maintenance equipment could be required e.g. ride on mowing equipment. Driving a council vehicle may also be required.
- Carry out on site risk assessments for each task, and ensure related paperwork is completed.
- Adhere to Health and Safety documentation such as risk assessments and Safe Systems of work, and to wear the correct PPE at all times.
- Carry out and assist in burials and Cemeteries maintenance tasks as required.
- Clearance of snow and ice from public highways and other public places.
- Clear areas and sites of litter, refuse, dirt, furniture, leaves, weeds and animal carcasses and faeces.
- Observe the customer care standards and treat all customers with dignity and respect.
- Champion equalities and challenge inappropriate conduct by team members.
- All duties must be carried out to comply with:
• The Health & Safety at Work Act.
• Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and Regulations and other legal requirements.
• Nationally agreed Codes of Practice, which are relevant.
- Duties will be carried out for the jobs up to and including those in the same grade, provided such duties are within the competence of the employee.
Person Specification
- Experience of tree felling and maintenance, including aerial work and rescue
- Experience of working in a customer focused environment, delivering services to householders and members of the public.
- To have good literacy, numeracy and communications skills and be able to follow instructions and complete relevant paperwork
- To be a willing team member, have the ability to work on your own initiative and make decisions within pre-determined guidelines
- Ability to deal with customers and members of the public in a polite helpful and professional manner.
- Ability to be flexible and willing to undertake work across the various Green Spaces activities within the Operations Service.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding duties, which will include lifting and carrying heavy weights and walking considerable distances.
- To take personal responsibility for your own Health & Safety and that of other colleagues and members of the public.
- Ability and willingness to demonstrate the council’s values and behaviours
