MBDA Missile Systems – Together. For the Future of Defence. Mechanical Engineering Level 6 Higher Degree Apprenticeship This is a fantastic opportunity for you to join an accredited Mechanical Engineering scheme that has developed some of the leading engineering apprentices in the UK. We offer a four-year programme to achieve BEng (hons) Mechanical Engineering degree. Our Apprentices learn about all aspects of Mechanical Engineering in MBDA through rotational placements, so that by the end of the 4 year programme they decide where in the function they chose to start the next phase in their career. ME is involved in all aspects of the product life-cycle; from early development and research, through to in service support. This opportunity will give you the foundations on which to build the expertise required to design, make, and test the next generation of missile system hardware. Working in a Mechanical Engineering team you will develop and support the mechanical aspects of our products, from airframe structures to ground support equipment, throughout their life-cycle. Mechanical Engineering teams strive to meet the required timescales of each of our projects and how best to optimise performance, whilst also keeping control of cost. The Opportunity You'll see all aspects of Engineering from a mechanical perspective, from computer aided concept design, simulation and modelling to hands on testing, and manufacture and assembly. Starting on more basic tasks, as you increase in confidence and your studies progress you'll get involved in more complex projects in an increasingly autonomous environment - but always with the support and guidance from world leading technical specialists in their field. During your placements and university studies you will be exposed to more than just mechanical engineering. You’ll develop the skills required to work as part of a multi-functional project team, regularly working with colleagues from other areas such as Electronic & Environmental Engineering. Through your placements, you’ll experience: A truly diverse Mechanical Engineering function which takes ideas from Theory to Design some incredible niche areas that are unique to MBDA key engineering design and analysis skills Understanding material properties how to use industry standard design tools, such as Creo Parametric as well as simulation and modelling packages: Altair, HyperMesh, and Ansys. This role would suit someone with an interest in hands on Engineering coupled with a strong aptitude of problem solving and a passion and well-grounded understanding in mathematics and applied sciences. This is a great opportunity to work with state of the art technologies which also opens up many opportunities for progression after your apprenticeship - such as: people manager, technical specialist, project manager, and beyond. Programme Structure Our Mechanical Engineering degree apprenticeship is a 4 year course where you will study towards a fully funded BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. You will study for this qualification on a minimum of one day release per week, at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield. During your first 2 years you'll benefit from a fixed set of placements, rotating departments to give you a good insight into the basics of Mechanical Engineering and related departments in MBDA. Years 3 and 4 you'll get to pick the placements that you would like to do (from a defined list of options and based on availability), as well as have the option to do an 'external' placement in another function or with a supplier/external agency. During you fourth year you’ll complete an individual research project with the option for this to be an industry sponsored project in partnership with MBDA.
