Job Purpose Reporting to the Operations Director, the Health and Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring the site's health and safety (H&S) compliance by developing, implementing, and monitoring the H&S plan, and to effectively communicate and influence senior management on H&S priorities and performance. Additionally, the role involves auditing high-risk areas, coaching managers, and working closely with various departments to manage risks and ensure legal requirements are met. The purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, protect the workforce, and improve overall safety performance across the site. Duties include: · Act as role model and ambassador towards our Company values · Evaluate and communicate priorities · Develop, help implement and monitor the H&S plan · Report performance to the senior management team and other stakeholders – including incident performance and proactive measures e.g. plan implementation · Communicate to and influence the senior management team · Audit high consequence areas such as isolation & lock off, legionella controls, permit implementation etc. · Coach managers and team leaders to manage risks in their areas of responsibility · Keep up with new technology and promote new practices which will improve performance over time – ‘stealing new ideas with pride’ · Work closely with the engineering and facilities managers to help them discharge their responsibilities and make sure the right checks and balances are in place · Liaise with external enforcement agencies where applicable, in a productive, respectful manner · Develop themselves and ensuring the continual professional development (CPD) is up to date · Work with the HR teams to ensure a competency framework is implemented to ensure those at all levels understand their responsibilities and accountabilities · Advise the Managing Director on the RIDDOR Regulations and report incidents on behalf of the site · Ensure that the site discharge their H&S legal requirements and where gaps are identified there is a prioritised plan in place to resolve · Inspect and audit standards (especially high consequence areas) and reporting findings to the Senior Management team · Advise and support projects and new machinery purchase to ensure our legal requirements are met and we get it ‘right first time’ · Working with the HR team to ensure that health issues are well managed and risks are reduced · Facilitate accident reduction plans at site and departmental level · Help facilitate an effective H&S committee which consults with all members of the workforce Skills include: · NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent (Business for H&S course is an equivalent. Working towards a NEBOSH Diploma would be an advantage.) · Technical Member of IOSH preferable · 2-5 years safety experience preferably in food manufacturing. · Will have worked as a H&S Manager/ Adviser/Coordinator in a manufacturing environment – preferably food. Will have some experience of key food industry hazards such as machinery guarding especially taking into use, workplace transport, legionella controls, fire, contractor control and PTW · Will have experience of implementing safety management systems and investigating and learning from incidents · Will understand how a H&S culture is developed and implemented and be able to put in place strategies to engage others in our H&S journey · They will be passionate about pursuing a career in health & safety and willing to continue to learn · Coaching and Influencing others experience · Up to date knowledge of H&S legislation · High attention to detail · Strong and concise communication · Data analysis driven from problem solving · Values people Role Summary The H&S Manager will support the Directors and the senior management team to discharge their responsibilities. They will develop, implement and review the health & safety management system arrangements to ensure that risks are controlled in line with legal and Company Standards. They will review H&S training, coach managers and team leaders to discharge their responsibilities and help create a culture where safety is the ‘way we do things around here’ and where everyone ‘looks after themselves and others’. They will be able to evaluate complex information and communicate it to ‘lay’ people in a succinct and easy to understand form and will be able to develop relationships, which will encourage and even inspire others to ‘never walk past’ an unsafe situation without intervening. Although their natural reaction will be to help solve problems to ensure tasks can be completed safely, where this cannot be done, they will be strong enough to say ‘no’ and develop plans to do the work safely in another way/timeframe. They will be admired by their peers and respected for their knowledge and problem solving ‘can do’ approach. They will act as the health & safety conscience of the organisation.
