Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust
With the opening of our brand new Comprehensive Cancer Centre (The Dyson Cancer Centre) in April 2024, this is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and ambitious oncologist to join our cohesive and committed team. We are recruiting a 10 PA substantive consultant oncology colleague with a specialist interest in Breast and Colorectal cancers. This is a new expansion post where you will be joining a dynamic and friendly team of both established and new oncologists who value teamwork and input into many national roles.
Main duties of the job
The job is 10 PAs with an 8.5:1.5 DCC:SPA split providing full oncological systemic services for patients with Breast and Colorectal cancers. For first-year Consultants, there will be a reduction in Outpatient Clinic commitment with mentoring, including a Trust New consultants induction programme, to enable new consultants to find their feet and build confidence and relationships within the department and wider trust.
Consultants currently provide an out of hours on-call service shared within a 1:8 weeks rota during which they advise the Acute Oncology Service (delivered by three acute oncology nurse practitioners and three junior doctors) during the day, supervise the inpatient ward, and take out of hours calls Monday to Sunday, with a reduction in outpatient clinics during that week. They also support the SpRs covering the Oncology Ward inpatients and helpline at the weekends on the 1:8 rota. With this phase in consultant expansion, the on-call commitment will reduce, and with future expansion of medical oncology posts, the role of Clinical Oncologists in Acute Oncology will be reduced with increased focus on radiotherapy delivery. It is anticipated that new consultant colleagues will undertake approximately 150-200 new referrals per calendar year, depending on demand.
A commitment to CME and maintaining professional expertise is essential. Attendance at meetings and courses to support this is embedded in the department's culture.
