Lead Artist
We are a dynamic video game startup based in Cambridge, UK, dedicated to creating immersive and innovative multiplayer gaming experiences. Our team comprises passionate professionals who are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in gaming. We are seeking a talented Lead Artist to join our team and drive the artistic vision of our projects, ensuring they stand out in the competitive landscape of modern gaming.
As the Lead Artist at World Makers, you will be responsible for defining and maintaining the visual direction of our games. You will work closely with the art, design, and engineering teams to ensure that all visual aspects of our games are cohesive, compelling, and aligned with the creative vision. You will lead and mentor a team of artists, guiding them to produce work that meets the high standards of our studio.
This is a hybrid role. The successful applicant will be expected to spend two days per week onsite in Cambridge, UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the overall artistic vision and style for our games.
- Lead and mentor a team of artists, providing guidance, feedback, and support.
- Collaborate with designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure visual consistency across all game elements.
- Create and oversee the production of high-quality assets, including characters, environments, and visual effects.
- Ensure that all visual content adheres to performance and technical constraints.
- Stay updated with industry trends and incorporate best practices into the art production pipeline.
- Advocate for and implement innovative artistic techniques and tools to enhance the visual quality of our games.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience in game art development.
- Proven experience in a lead or senior artist role, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.
- Expertise in 2D and 3D art, including modelling, texturing, and animation.
- Proficiency with industry-standard software, such as Maya, Blender, Photoshop, and Substance Painter.
- Strong understanding of game engines, particularly Unreal Engine.
- The willingness and ability to be a hands-on member of the art team.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude towards tackling artistic challenges.
- A deep passion for video games and a strong sense of visual storytelling.
Bonus Skills
- Experience in developing art for multiplayer or networked games.
- Knowledge of technical art, including shader development and optimisation.
- Experience with console game development.
- Strong understanding of art direction in different game genres.
- A degree in Art, Animation, Game Design, or a related field.
