About Airservices Australia (Airservices)
Airservices is a government-owned Corporate Commonwealth Entity, established by the Air Services Act 1995 (the Act), responsible for providing safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible air navigation and aviation rescue firefighting services to the aviation industry.
Airservices' has a critical role in ensuring the safety of the aviation industry, managing 11 per cent of the world's airspace, and supporting more than four million aircraft movements and over 160 million passengers, annually, across 29 air traffic control towers, 27 fire stations across Australia and more than 600 remote and regional sites.
Airservices currently has an annual turnover of over $1 billion, before expenses (2023-24) and is funded by industry through various charges for the provision of its services and facilities. These charges are regulated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, subject to notifying the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport Regional Development and Local Government (the Minister) in accordance with the Act.
Airservices employs around 3,500 staff, including Air Traffic Controllers, Aviation Rescue Fire Fighters, Engineers, technical and trade specialists, and staff in administrative roles and enabling professions.

The Board
The Board is the governing body of Airservices and is accountable for deciding the objectives, strategies and policies to be followed by Airservices, and for ensuring that Airservices fulfils its statutory functions in a proper, efficient and effective manner, and in line with the Minister's Statement of Expectations (SoE).
The Board of Airservices is governed by the Act and accountable to the Minister. All Board members, other than the CEO, are appointed by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government (the Minister), following endorsement by the Prime Minister and / or Cabinet. The CEO is appointed by the Board following consultation with Government.
The Board comprises the following non-executive members :
* a Deputy Chairperson;
* the Chief Executive Officer (CEO); and
* six other Board members.
The remuneration and allowances for the Chair and other Board members are set independently by the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal.
The Airservices Board is supported in its work by five standing committees :
* Board Safety Committee
* Board Audit and Risk Committee
* Board Technology Committee
* Board People, Culture and Remuneration Committee
* Board Sustainability Committee
The key duties of the position include
Position Overview
The Chair leads the Board in providing strategic oversight of Airservices, ensuring the Board fulfils its responsibilities as set out in the Board Charter and the Minister's SoE to achieve the safe, efficient, and sustainable delivery of air traffic management and aviation rescue firefighting services across the nation.
The Chair is responsible for ensuring Airservices maintains its focus on safety as the primary consideration, whilst also delivering strong financial and service delivery performance, and guiding the organisation's response to emerging aviation industry trends and challenges.
This is a part-time statutory appointment, which will require a time commitment of approximately 2 days per week, including attendance at scheduled Board meetings, and additional time for committee meetings, stakeholder engagement, and special projects as required.
The appointment will be for an initial four-year term, with possibility of reappointment, subject to government endorsement.
Key responsibilities :
* Working collaboratively and impartially with the Minister and Government of the day to support and implement relevant regulations and policies articulated by the Government;
* Lead the Board to drive the strategic direction and ensure the effective overall governance and management of Airservices, in accordance with the Act.
* Manage Board business and administration, as outlined in the Board Charter;
* Convene, preside and facilitate Board meetings and other relevant meetings relating to Board business, and foster a positive Board and organisational culture that promotes robust discussion, effective decision-making, and ethical behaviour;
* Actively identify, address and mitigate conflicts of interest within the Board;
* Lead the Board in overseeing major capital expenditure, investment and business decisions, other financial matters, and strategic initiatives;
* Oversee the performance evaluation of the Board, individual Board members, and Board committees;
* Act as the primary liaison between the Board and the CEO, facilitating effective communication of Board decisions to the CEO, to ensure the effective implementation of Board decisions;
* Oversee the CEO's management of Airservices' operations, organisational capacity, financial and service delivery performance, and the exercise of its functions;
* Work closely with the CEO and the Board to drive organisational culture transformation and monitor Airservices progress towards strengthening its organisational capability and culture;
* Maintain highly productive relationships and clear and effective communication with the responsible Minister, the Department and key industry stakeholders on strategic matters affecting the organisation and its performance, including significant risks, events or issues;
* Oversee the provision of regular performance reporting, Board reports and any additional reporting requested, to the Minister and the Department.

* a proven ability to make lawful, robust and effective Board-level decisions and develop practical solutions to support the successful operations of Airservices;
* strong commercial acumen and proven track record working in a financially complex organisation, and / or delivering financial transformation and uplifting financial performance;
* a proven capacity to provide high quality information, assistance and advice in a complex environment, with an appreciation of the challenges facing the aviation and transport sector;
* demonstrated high level Board leadership, management, interpersonal and communication skills, and proven ability to build consensus and manage diverse stakeholder interests;
* high-level business and aviation sector professional networks, or ability to develop these; and
* ability to champion and drive cultural change.
