Job summary Within Derbyshire we are building brand new healthcare facilities as part of our Making Room for Dignity programme. This is a chance to join our team at Kingfisher House, as an experienced Senior Occupational Therapist. Kingfisher House is a 14-bed male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, opening Spring 2025. This service is new to Derbyshire, making this post an exciting opportunity to be part of the development of the service. Our team will support those with an acute mental health illness, requiring an enhanced level of care to support in an acute inpatient environment. As a Multi-Disciplinary Team we will work proactively with our patient group and their loved ones, promoting independence and choice in their care, aiding their recovery. As a member of the team, the post holder will be expected to adopt the policies and philosophy of theservice, including trauma-based care and the recovery model. They will provide occupational assessment and treatment including a range of standardised assessments and appropriate practically orientated interventions. The patients at Kingfisher House will have enhanced care needs, including severe mental health, physical health, trauma-based, neurodiversity and sensory needs. The Occupational Therapist will draw on a range of occupationally based assessments and interventions as appropriate. They will foster a learning culture and promote social inclusion, enabling independence, and enhancing the autonomy of the service user. Main duties of the job Have a high clinical profile that includes the provision of individual treatment, as well as having a global overview of therapeutic interventions and clinical activities in Kingfisher House, alongside other members of the team, including psychology, physiotherapy and nursing. Actively engage in the promotion and implementation of sensory informed strategies throughout the environment. This includes devising individualised sensory based care plans, supporting team awareness and implementation of sensory modalities. Demonstrate expert knowledge in the acute setting, ensuring this is disseminated in a constructive and effective way in the context of the recovery philosophy and the social inclusion agenda. Actively manage own workload, effectively and efficiently prioritising competing demands. Assess the needs of service users in complex situations using professional knowledge, judgements and skills to account for decisions made. Ensure all patients have their occupational therapy needs included within their up-to-date care plan, which where possible has been negotiated with the patient to meet their individual occupational needs. Demonstrate an understanding of leadership theory and how strategies can be adapted according to need. Actively participate in clinical practice development through mentoring and coaching, in particular facilitating student education and fieldwork placements.
