Commercial Manager (Subcontractor)

As Commercial Manager you will be overseeing and making commercial decisions throughout the company. You will also be the line manager for the Commercial team, reporting directly to the Managing Director. You must have a risk averse attitude and carry out risk analyses that benefit the business. You will also be responsible for implementing new procedures to ensure the company evolves in an ever-changing industry.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Risk Management
* Assessing project risk and taking decisions on a day-to-day basis. Resolving contractual and commercial problems.Provide contractual advice during the tendering process.
* Reviewing Contracts and negotiating with client, reaching agreement of the contract before handed over to the QS team. – Any items of concern will be presented to a director along with the commercial managers opinion of how to best proceed.
* Ensure the subcontract process is administered correctly and provide signature on high value orders.
* If a project is deemed ‘at risk’ the commercial manager will take the lead and arrange meetings/reviews with the project team as necessary and provide summary at Director level.
* Organising the insurance covers and bonds the company requires.
* Liaising with insurance broker & legal team for or any arising issues.
Financial Management
* Offering financial direction and instruction to the project team, ensuring they understand key aspects of the contract.Reporting on financial performance to Director level.Manage CVRs on a monthly basis, including planning and organising.
* Ensuring reported figures are correct and align with the cost to complete figures (if required) when closing out a project.
* Ensure timely collection of due monies and chasing overdue monies.
* Tracking & updating retentions and claiming on a monthly basis.
* Ensure all valuations are submitted on time, keeping the forecasted application spreadsheet updated.
* Uploading all retention applications on accountancy software.
* Updating the accounts department on expected subcontractor pay out figure on a weekly basis.
* Providing an accurate WIP figure on a monthly basis.
* Overseeing the subcontractor invoices and ensure these are passed over for payment in due course.
Quality Management
* Preserving or improving procedures and standards, creating templates for various tasks. Work closely with the head of the finance department to make sure both departments align and provide key information to one another.
* Identify improvements to commercial procedures – and implementing the necessary changes.
* Keeping the labour forecast spreadsheet updated.
Relationship Management
* Manage potential mediation/adjudication or any type of claims.
* Deal with claims preparation, final account negotiation and settlement.
* Manage and deal with any contractual issues arising out of new or old projects.
People Management
* Managing and mentoring the quantity surveying team. Provide assistance, support and guidance on all commercial issues within the projects and ensure that commercial staff attain their maximum potential.
* Support the Business Manager with recruitment and selection of QS team.
* Organising and distributing projects across the team equally based on their performance.
* Develop and expand the commercial knowledge of the commercial team.
