Assistant Clerk of Works
Contract: Essex Highways

Join us in our partnership with Essex County Council on the Essex Highways Integrated Services contract. As part of our team, your primary focus will be overseeing the construction of developer-led highway infrastructure projects, including both new builds and enhancements to the existing network. Your goal will be to ensure these projects meet the standards set by the Highway Authority for adoption and maintenance as public highways.
This role demands meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to quality. You will be responsible for carefully monitoring the construction quality of highway works associated with approved planning consents, ensuring compliance with planning obligations and County Council policies. Your efforts will help maximize the durability and effectiveness of the highway works, balancing practical considerations and long-term outcomes.
The Role
•The role involves undertaking site based quality inspection relative to new road construction and alterations to the existing highway in order to validate its compliance with the approved drawings/specification, best practice and programme. Responsibility for ensuring all materials used meet our testing requirements.
•To prepare and assist in the management and monitoring of works programmes or services.
•To provide timely and accurate advice to County Councillors, District Members, Parish Councils and the general public on all highway-related matters, as required.
•To produce weekly detailed reports, and identify remedials and non-compliance to drawings as works proceed.
•The checking of all Traffic Management layouts, providing expert advice on construction methods to minimise impact on the network in liaison with the NRSWA Team.
About You
•Desire to learn about construction of Highways and good practise
•Proven experience in construction on a wide range of constuctuion schemes
•HNC, or eqivalent qualification, or experience in construction.
•Knowledge of a range of construction materials and construction methods relating to construction works gained through relevant experience within the industry
•Appropriate knowledge of Health and Safety legislation as it pertains to highway works and experience of applying control processes/measures to follow legislation knowledge and application of Health and Safety legislation
