Materials Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

As a Materials Engineering Apprentice, you’ll work with world-class scientists and engineers to ensure the materials we use are innovative and safe. Joining our central Engineering, Technology & Safety function, you’ll develop your knowledge of different materials and their uses while gaining experience in failure investigation studies, research and development, process control, manufacturing support, supplier management, and laboratory-related improvement activities.

The programme
Across four years, you’ll complete a series of placements in both materials and manufacturing. You’ll support processes involved in designing and manufacturing components, such as additive layer manufacturing, investment casting, welding, heat treatments, application of coatings, laser processes, and chemical processing. You’ll also work on various laboratory equipment, from initial microscopic component preparation to scanning electron microscopes.
This practical experience will be supported by formal learning as you undertake a degree in a Materials or Manufacturing discipline at the University of Derby, providing a mix of hands-on and theoretical experience.
What will I do?
* Help our suppliers deliver products and materials within specification.
* Statistically analyze and model material properties to help Design Engineers understand their behavior in extreme environments.
* Conduct forensic failure investigations through metallurgical analysis to improve performance and safety.
* Map out and improve technical processes to reduce costs and enhance delivery times.
* Test materials to understand their properties.
What you’ll need
* Five GCSEs including Maths and Physics at grade B/6, English Language at Grade B/5, plus 2 others at grade 4/C in any subject.
* 112 UCAS points from either:
o 3 A-levels at BBC, including Maths and Chemistry at grade C or above, plus one other, excluding General Studies.
o A Level 3 Extended BTEC Diploma in an Engineering-related subject at DDM.
