This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Surgical Nurse to work in General Surgery for WGH and SRH Hospitals. To provide professional leadership to the General Surgery team working in conjunction with the Matron and other Senior nurses to promote delivery of professional nursing care to General Surgery patients ensuring the highest possible standards of care are received by patients and their carers while in hospital.
To also lead in the planning, implementation, co-ordination and evaluation of educational activities within General Surgery wards to promote nursing excellence within the wards, and facilitate the continuous professional development and education of all members of staff in a positive learning environment.
We are currently in the process of relocating Elective Colorectal & Lower GI Cancer Surgery and Stoma Reversal Surgery from Royal Sussex County in Brighton to the Worthing site, creating a centre of excellence for Colorectal Cancer Surgery delivered across at Worthing and St Richard's hospitals.
This new post will be key in supporting the delivery of the service.
Main duties of the job
* Act as an expert clinical practitioner and provide high quality nursing care at senior level.
* Ensure the highest quality of nursing care is delivered to all Surgical patients with the promotion of evidence-based practice.
* Contribute to Surgical nursing strategy by developing innovative practice and guidelines for Surgical patients across the Trust including level 1 patients.
* Integrate policies, education, practice development and research relevant to the clinical area.
* Act as a resource and advisor for future service developments and Trust-wide training and education.
* Provide a rolling educational programme equipping health care professionals with knowledge and skills required to provide high quality care to Surgical patients.
* Act as a self-directed practitioner, providing support and guidance for staff working within Surgery Division.

Job responsibilities
* Contribute to service development and delivery and business planning with the ward or department manager and senior managers.
* Lead or attend case conferences, ward rounds and/or multi-disciplinary meetings as indicated.
* Plan, manage and prioritise a complex workload, delegating to the team and reorganising work as necessary.
* Maintain appropriate patient/service records and monitor the standards of those of the team.
* Adhere to all local standard operating procedures and policies.
* Participate in personnel functions such as recruitment, discipline, and the appraisal process in line with Trust guidelines and policies.
* Understand the wider departmental and organisational aims and priorities by engaging positively with the service and its users.
* Develop evidence-based practice based on national policy and ensure that these standards are monitored and adhered to by all members of the team.
* Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management and ensure its effective application to the workplace with guidance from departmental management when needed.
Person Specification
* Professional Nursing Registration - NMC Part 1 & 2.
* Substantial Critical Care experience at Band 6 level.
* Post Registration Qualification in Critical Care Nursing.
* Degree Level Qualification.
* PGCert Qualification, or working towards.
* Other Teaching Qualification.
* Leadership Qualification.
