Statement of the Position
The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science (HPEEX) within the School of Education at Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Health/Physical Education Teacher Licensure (F0094) position, with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2024. We seek candidates that have expertise in at least three of the following disciplines: Health Education, Elementary Physical Education Methods, Secondary Physical Education Methods, Curriculum, Assessment, and/or content specific courses(e.g., target games, invasion games, net/wall games, aquatics, dance, movement fundamentals, lifeguarding). Overview of the Department
Norfolk State University’s Department of Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science (HPEEX)is housed in the School of Education (SOE). The department offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science with concentrations in Health Fitness Instructor (HFI), Health Wellness Rehabilitation (HWR), Kinesiotherapy (KIN), and Health Physical Education P-12 (HPE). The successful candidate will teach classes within the undergraduate Health & Physical Education concentration of the Exercise Science degree. The candidate will assist with methods and internship supervision, advise and mentor students, hold office hours as designated by the University, engage in program development, curriculum reviews, and assessment of student learning, provide support for program coordination and
administration (e.g., recruitment, admissions, programming), and serve on Departmental, School, and University committees. The candidate will conduct scholarly research, publish in respected refereed scholarly journals and/or academic presses, and participate in other Scholarly activities to secure external funding.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A Ph.D.in Health/Physical Education or a related field from an accredited program is
necessary.
2. Candidates should have previous Health/Physical Education P-12 teaching
experience and be eligible for a Commonwealth of Virginia Professional License with an
endorsement in Health/Physical Education.
3. The candidate should be eligible to teach pedagogical Health/Physical Education courses
including elementary and/or secondary methods and content according to accreditation and
professional organization standards.
Additional Considerations
1. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of teaching pedagogical
Health/Physical Education courses including elementary and/or secondary methods and content.
2. Candidates with knowledge of and experience with CAEP standards for accreditation and assessment processes for continuous program improvement are preferred.
3. Candidates that demonstrate active engagement with students and student groups and have
a record of published research in health education or a related field are highly preferred.
